Thanks in advance.

Cheap? Try either Grand Mercure Fortune Hotel or The Emerald Hotel on Ratchadapisek Road. Their room rates start at USD 55 per night and both are 4 star hotels. Very clean and include breakfast buffets. I suggest staying off sukhumvit, cause of the noise and dirty air.

The Grand Mercure Fortune Hotel is also located with the Fortune Mall, which has a food court, IT center, cell phones, clothing, a market on the other end Tesco/Lotus, a KFC, Pizza Hut, etc. And it's a 3 minute walk to the subway station entrance. The buffet is okay. There is a coffee shop, sweets shop and a karaoke club there too. Make sure you get a room in the back. Some of the reviewers complained about the road noise.

The Emerald Hotel is further up the street and is just as nice. I prefer this hotel. The buffet is not bad, they have a coffee shop where you could smoke if you did, sweet shop and an okay spa in the hotel. The subway station is a 5 minute walk. Sukhumvit is a 12-15 ride on the subway. And MBK center is about 30 minutes by subway and Skytrain. I usually end up in a room on the south side, it is very quiet.

Most tourist attractions are only accessible by taxi or tuk-tuk. The Skytrain and the Subway come close to most tourist attractions. You can use MBK center as a hub and visit many of the tourist attractions. Or take the skytrain to the Victory Monument and go from there. Unless what you consider tourist attractions is the shopping malls. Then the skytrain comes close to most of them except for the Watergate or Pratunam district for clothing.

Using a taxi is inexpensive but time consuming. The traffic has gotten worse over the past 2 years I have been visiting Bangkok. Take one as necessary. What takes 15-30 minutes from the Fortune Hotel takes 45 minutes or more by Taxi. Keep in mind the subway closes around 23:30.

One other alternative is Veronica Residence, which I may try this next trip. At USD 37 per night it is a bargain for a 4 star residence. Though it is a little hard to find and a little off the beaten path. For a woman I would not suggest it. It's another stop up on the subway.

Good luck.

Depends on what you call cheap really... They are quite alot of good places to stay in Banglumphoo (excuse my spelling!) that's the general area that Khao San Road is in. If you head towards the river from KSR then there are good cheap guesthouses.

Another area which has some cheap accomodation but with a completely different atmosphere to KSR is a little area near to the MBK centre (mah bong krong centre - again my spellings prob wrong!). There are about 4 or 5 small guesthouses and a big hotel down a small side street. If you look in a lonely planet you will see where I mean. It was about 500baht a night give or take. Not bad for such a central location.

Good call on avoiding KSR by the way! I hate that road!

Even nice hotels are very cheap in Bangkok. I would go with the Davis. You can get rates from 75-100 easily. It is a 5 star type hotel. In New York City it would cost over 500 a night. You can always find places alot cheaper then that, but you are rolling the dice when you start to pick and choose in a place like Bangkok.

well I Must disagree with the last person. Yes Bangkok is very polluted. It is definitely dirty, maybe a little dusty, but then it is a hot country. To find dirty places go to any city in America or Britain. The street are covered in litter and the building are covered in graffiti. The Thai are proud of their city and do not drop little on the street. It is against the law as well. The vast majority of hotels are cheap and clean. There are many links on the Internet to find a hotel of your choice. It depends on what you price range is. Do not book into a motel, in Thailand these are rooms that can be booked by the hour, I am sure you can guess what for. Enjoy your time here and enjoy the people. But go outside of the big cities to Find the traditional Thailand. Beautiful place, Beautiful people.

Shanghai is really a distinguished global town pulling more and more interest from all over the earth; so see what this town provides with hotelbye . Shanghai is a favorite journey destination for visitors. In Shanghai you can see the marvelous Yu Garden (Yù Yuán), also called the Garden of Happiness. That Garden addresses a location of more than 20,000 square meters and consists of an outer and an inner garden. The oldest area may be the Outer Garden with further changes being made in the 18th century when Sansui Tang, the park's principal corridor, was added. The newer and significantly smaller Inner Garden appointments from 1709 and involves functions typical of a traditional Chinese writer's Garden: attractive small pavilions, decorative stones, and little mountain stages, separating surfaces and little wetlands, and a good highly designed theatrical stage.

Lots of places you can stay in Bangkok for a reasonable price say around 2000 baht/night (works out to about 30 GBP, if you are American you can reckon on 2 dollars to the pound these days).
The hotels below are good and central and very near to the skytrain and underground railways.

I think i also stayed at the Bel-air Princess - it sounds familiar and it was definitely just off sukhumvit road. The hotel and the area were both fine.
