I disagree with mostly what is said in justifying hinduism. Hindus (almost) 90% practically worship ganapathi (a god) with a face and head of elephant including snout and a human body. If you ask them reality of this ganapathi they would come with funniest story. If a ask an intellectual hindu he would quotes from vedas and says that hinduism is most monotheistic religion. But finally, the reality is that they don't follow vedas. Hindu padints would never teach vedas to common people. They would only use veda to prove thier point and finally go and worship literally anything.
Another problem is that, they can't distinguish between respect and worship. They would give same level of status to Husband, parents, fire, snake, cow, brahmin and The Creater. They have no problem in offering same worship to creature which they offer for creater.

Hey Sam!!! They are not many Gods, they are many forms of God.
We believe in respecting each and everything in this unverse. Paying respect to the moon, the stars, the sun, the earth , the air, the water.... and so on. It's not just that we got to do that because we are hindus but because they are a source of energy, a source of tranquility, a source of life, etc. to us.
While talking about idols, just observe the idols or the pictures closely. You will find some hidden messages in there. Each form is put up in a unique manner. Forget that it's the idol of a God. Think the way the researchers thought while unsolving the mystery of the great painting of Mona Lisa for the missing smile.
Let me give you an example of one of these mysteries I solved. When it comes to pictures of ganesha, you will find a muse nearby eating his laddoos. This symbolizises taht no matter how powerful and rich you are, make way for the needy. Be humble to everyone desrigarding their grades.
Got my point...

Hinduism actually also only believes in one creator, Shiva. However, they believe that Shiva is so far beyond mortal comprehension that he/she manifests him/herself in an infinite array of different forms that are specific to different places, times and situations. This, they believe, is the only way man can comprehend how God can be both the creator and the destroyer, light and dark, life and death. To us these opposing aspects may seem irreconcilable, but they are all God.
PS. Sorry folks. A bit rusty on my Hindu philosophy. The creator god is of course Brahman, not Shiva. Shiva is the destroyer.

Hindu culture is unique in this sense. We have many gods and goddesses. If you see the speciality of each you will find that each denotes a special characteristic which is essential for life : like Saraswati for learning, Durga for strength, Laxmi for wealth, Ram for Maryada, Krishna for love and affection, Shiva the god who can even digest Poison thus the symbol of tolerance and so on. So we have to worship these characteristic and in fact they are meant for this purpose only.

dear sam
i have been a practising hindu for nearly 22 years. hinduism neither says that there are many gods, nor does it say that there is one god.
hinduism says that there is only god
there is only god. hinduism have a total freedom in terms of religion. did you know that hinduism gives a follower of the religion even the right to be an atheist.
brahma --- creator, vishnu ---- preserver, shiva --- destroyer
all aspects of the same divine being. hindus see god in everything. what you say "many gods" are but different aspects of the same god according to desire of the devotee and according to the role which the devotee wants god to play
for example when a devotee seeks wealth --- he worships god as lakshmi the goddess of wealth
when he wants knowledge --- he worships the goddess of learning saraswati
you will never understand hinduism by comparing with christianity, judaism or islam --- these are religions that depend on a book, and a prophet
hinduism says "dont believe in any book or prophet" question and understand yourself --- challenge your understanding of the reality and experience divinity for yourself
this land of inidia has produced innumerable saints and devotees who have realized and experienced the state of god
according to hinduism god is not a person sitting somewhere with whom we can talk and eat
god is to be realized ..... not heard or seen or talked about
read the following books
1) BHAGAVAD GITA
2) UPANISHADS
3) SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM

Lord KRISHNA said that he will come to this earth whenever righteousness is in trouble and also He said that who ever you pray,He know that we meant to pray the GOD.
So many gods are not in Hindu religion only, but all are for whole world.

In hindu, it;s one god atually. Adhi Prashakthi is the god for all. She created lord shiva (destroyer) , lord bhrama (creator), and lord vishnu (preserver) for their purpose. And lord parvathi, lord saraswathi and lord lakshmi was created from adhi prashakthi. since all are one god which was created from adhi prashakthi. Thus we say God is inside us to relise it. And all gods or one. We can pray the god the way we want. well it is what i have learnt.
