my bf hasn't filed his taxes in 4-5 years, but he doesn't remember when he last filed-where can he go to find that out?
we are getting married in April and I told him that I won't marry him untill he files-I don't need the IRS after me :-)

Thanks for all of your input-he owed, that was why he originally stopped filing-he figured that he would do it the next year, and it became an issue of procrastination cus he figured they wouldn't catch him. I'm an accounting major so I am more "aware" i guess of the dangers (^_^)

Hi, Nicole! Congrats on your upcoming wedding, and I hope your husband-to-be can get his taxes straightened out without much trouble. He should call the IRS at 800-829-1040. They will confirm his identity and can then tell him which years he still needs to file and if there are any outstanding issues.

Check out the below link for more details. Good luck! :-)

Well, your boyfriend is right; it is possible that the IRS would never come after him. But apart from clearing the issue up so that it's not lurking in your marriage, getting caught up is just the right thing to do. Good job on helping get him back on track!

You're wise to insist that this is straightened out before you get married.

He needs to find out how far back he didn't file (calling the IRS should work), and then file the missing returns. Depending on whether he owed or had a refund coming, he might not even be in any trouble or owe any penalties. If he had a refund coming for those years, he'll still get it back as far as the 2003 tax year as long as he gets that filed by April 15, 2007. Any refunds from farther back than that are lost - too late to claim them.

Good luck. Maybe he'll have enough in refunds to pay for a nice honeymoon.

I had the same thing happen to me. My husband (now) hadn't filed for 4 years when we got married. Call the irs and find out when he last filed and go from there. If he is due a refund, there will be no penalties. The irs makes you pay penalties if you're late but they don't give out extra money if they owe you. If it's easy, you can do them yourself. Download the appropriate forms for the years he hasn't filed and find all his W-2's/1099's etc. If it's more complicated, I would go to an accountant to be sure everything is correct.

Good luck!

for one thing all work places give there workers there W2 forms so they can file there taxes on time. and if your b/f don't know how to file taxes or fill out the form for such there are lots of places that could help him with this. as for not fileing his taxes for 4-5 years he's lucky as not fileing taxes can send the said party to jail and im serious if the IRS gets wind of it. as for his can't remember when he last filed sounds more like to me he really didn't want to. and if lets say you both were married the IRS wouldn't come after you they would come after him

Ohhhh mannnnn you in shishkabab trouble ....

well i would assume calling the IRS and seeing when he filed last then asking them what are the consequenses of not filing for such a long period of time!

I have never came across someone who hasn't filed taxes! wow this is a shock to me.

Well it is a good move you told him to file his taxes b4 u get married to him and piece of advice, i think he is a lazy man and will remain lazy even after u marry him and will lag on during tax time and U will have to take that responsibility every year. I am assuming there are many things u do for him as well. So think on it before you wear that rock on your finger!

#1.. good job on not getting married.
it will drag you down for sure.

Go to a tax man...

he can help fix it for you. There maybe penalites.. but better than jail.
