eBay. Go directly to eBay, do not pass Go.
Don't go to a pawn shop or the jewelry district, because they'll gyp you right and left.
Go to a reputable jeweler and find out the following, if you don't already know:
1) The carat weight of the stone,
2) The exact color grade of the stone (should be a letter),
3) The exact clarity of the stone,
4) and the exact name of the central stone's cut (should be Princess, Round, Oval, etc.)
5) The exact metal and grade of metal (platinum, 18K white gold, 14K yellow gold, etc.)
Also, if there are smaller stones around the central stone, find out what combined carat weight and color grade they are as well.
Include all the above information in your eBay auction copy, and DON'T mention that it was an engagement ring from an engagement that went sour. A young bridegroom looking for a ring for his fiancee doesn't want to hear that!
Then use the money to buy yourself a new car or start an IRA; i.e., make a lasting investment. If the bum is gone, let him enrich your life in some other way.
ETA: If the bum broke up with you, you get to keep the ring. If the bum said you could keep the ring, you get to keep the ring. All the legal precedent on the matter says that if the groom breaks off the engagement, OR tells the bride she can keep the ring, it's HERS.

Have it appraised and then sell it on eBay.
Newspaper or craiglist is a little dangerous cause then you have nuts coming into your house. The jewelry store will only give you 10% of it's value. Ebay is the best bet and figure out a better way to describe it....... if it's old old- Vintage, retro..... it it's new used- slightly used and tell a small white lie- don't tell people if it's from a broken engagement- just say you upgraded. People get weird about broken engagement rings.....
I know a girl who won't take her mother's ring from a broken enagement and it was 1.5 carat oval..... what a waste!!

Ebay is the best place to sell everything. A pawn broker will rip you off and leave you feeling like a dirty old tart.
On ebay you can place a nice piccy and give a good description and show it to a wider viewing public.
Trust me I'm a doctor. Actually I'm not a doctor but I am seeing one.

You generally find that the ring will not sell for as much as you bought it for, my friend tried to sell her ring which cost almost £5000 (UK POUNDS) and all it was worth was around £40.

I'd try ebay over a pawn shop. Maybe the best deal to be gotten is through a classified ad in your newspaper.

Go to a bar and ask the owner if you can raffle off the ring on a Saturday night when it's really busy......get drunk and celebrate being rid of the Jack ***. Collect your money at the end of the night.

Get an appraisal done before you sell it so you know its value. Start with Ebay maybe and send the appraisal with it. Most all jewelery shops do appraisals for stuff that they do not sell for a modest price.

The quickest way is at the pawn shop - plus, if you change your mind you can usually get it back within a month or two.
But if your wedding plans fell through, you're supposed to give the ring back.
