It's a little of both, I suspect.
Imagine it in personal terms.
You may like and respect and even envy that one guy who has the money and the sports car and the beautiful women falling all over him, etc.
But don't you find him at least a bit annoying at times?
The United States is well-blessed and has achieved much.
That's bound to breed a little resentment.

I dont hate the US. Not most of the people anyway. Bush and his friends? Yes. I do not envy you either. I actually think Britain is better than the US and Europe is better than the Americas. Theres something of everything in both but Europe seems better. For examle, Germany is the cleanest country on earth, the mediteranian has access to several countries and a great set of beaches, Britain attracts millions due to one person ( the Queen ), Belgium has reminders of past horrors that remined us not to do it again, the Alps, the Vatican and many more things europe has. I know the Americas have many things but they seem hidden and corrupt because parts of the Americas are still poor and third world with little sign of improvemnt in the near future but Europe has this withe the expansion of the EU and the chance for a better life for millions more. As far as military needs i am more than happy with the British Armed Forces and have no doubts they would stop anyone invading our land as we have managed for 1000 years.

America produces television shows which display green lawns, crowded freeways, happy families, and a wonderful life. Imagine the reaction of people in poor countries seeing our soap operas, our movies? Of course there is envy, jealousy over our way of life. Then, when we show them (the poor countries) through television how we live, we tell them how they should live...but don't help them get the things we have. If we support the rulers of an oppressive nation, how can we expect the people of that nation to admire us? As far as our military is concerned, I'm sure most governments would like to have a powerful military...if only to prevent the United States from invading them.

Neither. Americans over all have from the best to the worst anywhere.
For instance Canada's free loving people is almost unique, Brazil's tremendous diversity, Argentina's incredible beauty, Mexico's natural resources, United States standard of living OR the poor health conditions in Haiti the poorest American nation of Bolivia etc. America has the best and the worst.

No doubt we're envied for our lifestyle. And as far as hated, seems like a fad to hate America, but deep inside those haters would love to be here.
