Could be, but it could also be allergies to soaps, fleas, or other outside influences. It could also be a vitamin deficiency. Take her to the vets to be sure. If it is nerves, they will prescribe medication, if it is allergies or vitamin deficiency, they will prescribe vitamins or kitty benadryl.

This could be caused by a allergy if you are sure she as not got fleas. It could allergy to anything really, maybe something in the grass or plants even.
Your best bet is to take her to the vets, they will probably give her something to calm any itchiness and my advie is a bucket on her head too to prevent it getting worse whilst on any treatment.
I had a cat ages ago with the similar problem as you describe.Even though we never got down to the bottom of why he had lost his fur the treatment and bucket helped.A few days his fur were nicely growing back.
Hope this is of some help to you.

my mom's elderly cat (21 years old!!) has pulled out a lot of her fur and we noticed a skin condition that was brought on by an allergic reaction to fish; she now eats soley chicken and rice formulas and the skin condition is clearing up and her fur is growing back in; does your cat itch alot?? if so that might be the reason for the balding; if no... then it could be a nervous condition.

My cat did/does this. I believe it is an allergic reaction but with my cat it comes and goes. I went to a holistic pet shop in NY and they told me that many cats are developing this type of allergy and that gamy (preferably raw) meat is an alternative that often helps. I tried putting her on a specific diet of raw venison but it became a hassle to deal with so she is now eating Nature Balance Venison and Peas in a can. (Nature Balance also has an allergy formula of Venison and Peas in dry.)
I was correcting her for it and so now I think she is chewing it off to get my attention sometimes. Before it was obsessive and now it is only an occasional shave...

Sounds like it could be stress. Take cat to vets.
You can get a thing that you plug in to a wall socket, which emits some sort of smell that is supposed to help with stressed cats. I think it's called Feliway.

sounds like stress. same thing happened to one of my cats after we moved home. talk to a vet. it's easily treatable if you find & deal with the source of your cat's stress. good luck.
p.s. untreated or ignored, such a level of stress can kill your cat. act now.
