I just bought this suv and found both springs were broken. After raising and suporting vehicle to remove springs I found out they where so bad that they did'nt have any tension on them anymore so was able to remove them by making one cut through sping with grinder and they came out in four pieces. The chilton tells me to disconnect the front driveshaft from the axle, stabilizer bar links and shocks at axle, disconect the track bar at the sill braket and the tie rod at the pit mam arm. then lower the axle untill tension is removed. It does not mention any thing about a spring compretion tool. Well my qestoin is do I need to discnnect all this stuff if I use this tool, or will the tool even fit with that thing that looks kind of like a shock that is in the midel of the spring?

no if you use the compressing tool you just take out the spring we got some and they work wonders. it saves a lot more time and you dont have to take off parts that are a pain to take off like the tie rod, pitman arm and what not. now im not sure what your talkin about with the thing that looks like a shock in the middle of the spring because on the jeeps the only thing that should be in the middle is the bump stop if there is anything else in there then you should just take it out cuz its not goin to do anything for your jeep. but either way the compressor goes on the outside of the spring so it will compress it with anything in the middle.

When you have everything disconnected except the control arms the diff is free to drop a good distance away from the truck. this will allow you easier access to slip the springs into the buckets. Then raise the diff with a jack just enough to slightly compress the springs and allow you to reattach all the disconnected parts. Make sure you matchmark the drive shaft before you remove it. A spring compressor is not necessary.

You should remove the shock in the middle of the spring, this will give you more room. You can rent a spring compression tool and replace it easily by fitting it around the shock and then tightening the spring untill it will fit, then replace all hardware and reconnect the shock, I've done this many times and it is a pain in the ***, But it does work

Disconnect the parts. The spring compressor will not fit into the space for the spring, plus it is much safer to do it the recommended way.

You could try to install the springs without compressing them however following chilton instructions will be the safest and best way, good luck.

350z and Alden do NOT appreciate the true value of a low mileage well maintened Jeep Cherokee 4x4. Based on your description, it's well worth $3k ,even more to my mind.
