We are worried about wireless being not that great and not as reliable. Any help would be appreciated!

Also, will this be a pain to keep changing batteries in our system if we choose wireless?

It depends on the wireless system you are considering and if you are going to do it yourself or have it professionally installed. I had a wireless X-10 system I installed myself and it wasn't all that great. I then picked up an Ademco wireless system a few years back and it has been very reliable. The X-10 used 9 volt batteries that needed frequent changing but the ademco unit uses lithium batteries that seem to last forever. The ademco system is usually sold and installed by alarm professionals. I had a friend pick one up for me and I did the installation myself. One good thing about wireless is you dont have much wires to run so you can "do it yourself"

I have been selling alarm systems for a little over 10 years now.Your batteries should only have to be changed about once every 5 years.Of course different pieces of equipment will be replaced at different times. Its no big deal and easy to do.Most companies will supply you with batteries and if you push them they will come replace them for you.Wireless is just just as good as a hardwire system maybe better. You dont have to run wires throughout the house. It also is a much easier install if you have more than one level in your home. For a look at some do it yourself ideas to add to your security click on http://www.covertonesecurity.com/products.asp?cat=19&pg=4
