Yes, your relative should bring a hostess gift. A simple bottle of wine is great.
Addition: Only 6? That makes a difference. The young man is not expected to bring a hostess gift when he's only 6. The adult who is accompanying him should bring the gift.

Depending on the age, yes I always bring a bottle of wine, an appetizer, some flowers or something to a party.

Yes, it's always a good gesture. I don't image 'young' means he can bring a bottle of wine, but flowers would be good.

It's never incorrect to give someone something.
It could be a token something.
But I don't know whether it's expected. It would depend on the particular people involved.

Yes, definately.
I always do that. Unfortunately, it offended an exboyfriend and his Mom. I baked a nice cake for the Mother's Day dinner at her home and none of her family wanted her cake---- they only wanted mine. He told me later my cake tasted better but his Mom was offended.

Its considerate but not expected. Wine is nice, or a kind of hors de vous centerpiece.

Probably don't need to, but he can bring his favorite bottle of wine, just in case.
