This the history of purple dye. It was made in ancient times by squeezing the gonads of, I believe it was clams. It took thousands of clams to make a small amount of the dye, thus only the very wealthy could afford it. It was reserved for royalty. An English king decreed that only the king could wear purple and that's why it is the symbol of royalty.

I'll have to disagree, I mean people used to be stupid but they weren't THAT stupid. Who would actually paint something with crap? It would smell like...well, crap.
