There was no Roman Catholic church till the third century when the Roman Empire collapsed and they decided to get into the religious business. How could God bless a church with such a dismal, ugly past that has subjugated its people so long. The Romans killed Apostle Paul and Jesus. Wake up folks!

Actually, the idea isn't so much that the church would rest on Peter, but that Peter, as an uneducated fisherman, could still teach the Word of God to others, who would than teach others, and so on. He became a point or corner from which God's Word would expand.

More than anything, that is one lesson we should take from the Apostles, that it does not require a formal religious education, or even a regular education, to be able to learn God's Word and teach it to others.

Saul of Tarsus was a highly educated man, who could prove that these early Jews, who are form a new Jewish Sect based on the teachings of another uneducated man, and who was executed by the state, were nothing more than a cult. They were spreading their cultist beliefs by going door to door telling their Brethren that the rituals, beliefs, and observances (holidays) dating back hundreds of years were no longer valid.

For Saul, it took a miracle from Christ to change his path in life.

The question ones need to ask themselves are whether they are like Saul, who opposed the teachings, because you think you are learned and know better, or like Peter, and uneducated man, who was the corner or beginning of a new state of belief in God? Do you follow the example of Saul in opposing the spread of God's Word, or Peter, who went house to house teaching God's Word?

Jesus is the "cornerstone" but Jesus was the one who changed Simon's name to Peter and that means rock, and on that rock Jesus built His Church and hell will never prevail against it.
It's all in the Bible.

The pagan Romans killed Peter too, and many martyrs of the Roman Church, the native Americans ripped hearts out of people, the british burned people in wicker cages, what's your point?

What part of "YOU" don't you understand? Jesus looked directly at the Apostle Simon, and said to Him, "Simon, YOU are Rock". That sounds pretty difficult to misinterpret. You do know that the Apostle's name was Simon, right? Not Peter. "Peter" is merely a form of the Greek "Petros", meaning "Rock". No-one had ever addressed Simon As "Peter" - "Rock" before this moment. Christ attached this descriptive term to Simon's name, so that thereafter he was known as "Simon Peter" - "Simon the Rock". The very next words out of Christ's mouth after telling Simon he was "Rock" were, "and upon this Rock I will build my Church". If Simon was not the Rock upon whom the Church would be built, what possible reason could Jesus have had in telling him he was "Rock"?? This passage is one of those that is perfectly clear on the face of it, and can only be misinterpreted by conscious effort to misinterpret it.

The fact that Jesus is "the Rock" is precisely what makes it so profoundly significant that Jesus Himself, The Rock, used the exact same term in appointing His earthly representative, who would speak in His name and guide His people. He was reinforcing what He had already told Simon - "He who hears you hears Me".

Immediately after telling Simon he was the foundation of the Christian Church, Jesus equipped Him to serve in that unique capacity, by granting him supreme authority (the keys to the kingdom), and infallibility ("whatsoever you bind upon earth is bound in heaven").

Yes! Peter was a tiny piece of THE ROCK, but he was not the rock nor the cornerstone! A very much misunderstood verse. I wish pastors would study that verse and explain it more accurately to their flocks!

>>Don't you know that Jesus was the rock, the corner stone, not Peter?<<

Yes; this is what the Catholic Church teaches. "The Lord Himself compared Himself to the stone which the builders rejected, but which was made into the cornerstone." -- Lumen Gentium 6

That is correct. It was Peter's confession that Jesus is Lord that is the rock spoken of in that passage, not Peter himself. Of course, Jesus Himself is our rock and our fortress, our deliverer, our redeemer, our strong tower, our shelter in time of need....the list goes on.
