Truthfully I've never heard of it, but I'm sure it's a good style; any style is! It's probably very similar to most Korean type Martial Arts, but I think it's a fine style to take. If you are concerned with self defense however, I suggest that in addition to Hwa Rang Do, you learn all types of Martial Arts (especially Judo and Grappling). I really don't think any style (excpet MAYBE Jeet Kune Do... it was kinda made to have everythign in it) covers all aspects of fighting completely.

Of the Korean styles Hwa Rang Do is the MOST complete of them. It actually is one of the oldest styles and was intended (according to my instructor) to be a combat art. It uses both linear and circular movements and employes strikes, blocks, joint and muscle locks, controlling techniques, nerve and pressure point strikes and is still taught with the idea of practical usage. It is one of the more veristile styles and is the one that many of the other Korean styles evolved from.
