I have a bank card (ATM) visa debit linked to both checking and savings but no money in it (I am negative). If I take out 500.00 will it be accapted or not? Also does it matter if it is my banks ATM or can I do it anywere? How will any ATM machine even know how much is in my checking or savings?

The Visa logo is a guarntee of payment:You can use any ATM not just your banks. If you have overdraft protection try the 500 or a lesser amount. I confess i was low and overdrew my account (which was negative) twice for a total of $700.00.
It just a machine, and they like to sock you with charges. If your stuck and need the cash, write a check for a few items at the grocery store too: and get cash back. Look the world isn't perfect, and things happen.Give it a go!

If you try to take the money out of an ATM, whether from your bank or another's, the withdrawal will be declined if you lack sufficient funds. This is because the ATM network is real-time, and the debit actually checks your balance before it is allowed.

Now, if you were to go to some POS (point-of-sale) terminal that takes credit cards and run the card through as credit to pay for a small purchase, that purchase would probably go through. If you tried to get "cash back" at that same POS, it probably would be declined.

Cash is king...ATMs spit out cash and the balance is checked each time.

An ATM is NOT a credit card. It is just like writing a check. Every so often, it will "go through" but certainly not for the amount you are talking about when you have a zero balance. Also, if it DOES go through, you can and most likely will be charged an overdraft fee between 25-40 dollars. Bottom line-if you have no money in your accounts-you have no money.

An ATM card is the same as writing a check. If your bank allows you to take more than you have in your account you will incur overdraft charges from the bank and the vendor.

If you have no money, you can't pull out anything from it. the ATM does check your checking account for available funds. no matter what ATM you use, as long as it accepts your ATM card (typically found on the back they have different logos etc).

I do not believe that it will let you take the money out. Unless you just went negative today and then you go to an ATM other than your own it will not show. But this is illegal. (Just thought I would let you know.)

It knows. If you have no money in the bank you can't take anything out.

They know. If you have no money in either account it won't let you withdraw any.
