I'm covering a cake with rolled fondant, and then adding little embellishments made of fondant. Should I use food paste coloring for the decorations, or put them on first and brush on luster dust or food paint.....? I'm going for a very bright, primary color scheme.

The last fondant cake I made, I used both paste coloring as well as luster dust. I used the paste for the large pieces of fondant that I used to cover the cakes, and I used the luster dust on the smaller decorations. I find that the luster dust helps to make the decorations stand out from the cake itself because of the sheen/glittery appearance. Luster dust comes in all sorts of wonderful colors and you should be able to find bright colors for your cake. I used the luster dust on the decorations prior to placing them on the cake, and after they were thoroughly dry, I had no trouble putting them on, attaching them with a bit of royal icing.

Good luck!

You could do it, but if the fruit is wet at all or if the juices will run at all, your fondant will get very very sticky (and it may drip down the side since fondant is so smooth) Could you put a layer of buttercream between the fruit and the fondant? That would protect the fondant and help the fruit stick.
