actually it started in either England for France. Either England or France during a war would cut off the middle finger of either England or Frances finger and so either one of those countries would taunt the french by sticking the middle finger up and now a days we use it for different reasons like what other people said, fk you. I think it was the English doing the removing of the middle fingers of the french

way back in history, Hundred Years War I think, the deadliest folks on the battle field was the English long bow man. When the French captured a bow man they would cut off their two middle fingers on their right hand, the ones used to pull the string of the bow. As a taunt bowmen would show the French these middle fingers as a gesture of defiance and disdain. saying "You haven't got me yet", now you know

As everyone has already noted it stands for the derogative personal attack of "F--- you!"

The interesting thing is that this gesture has been around for a very long time, the Romans used the middle finger for much the same meaning some 2,000+ years ago.

'flipping someone the bird' means **** off! or get lost! its not a nice thing so i would not go sticking your middle finger up at your parents or any authority. but if some one really annoys you, raise up those middle fingers and tell them to go jump off a cliff.

originally people stuck two fingers up.
It come from wars between the English and the French, If the french captured English archers they would cut off those two fingers so they couldn't fire their bows anymore, so English soldiers began making the two fingered gesture, to say nah! nah! ain't got me, but not as polite.

it is a quaint american custom, actually from the south. It means
"Howdy I want to be your friend". If they want to be your friend too, they will stick up their middle finger too.
