I, like many other people I'm sure, am totally fed-up with the whole Microsoft corporate $hit, and the constant problems with XP and so forth. I don't want to buy Vista, I don't see how it'll improve my experiences with my PC, as I mainly use it for gaming, skype and a few other bits n pieces, plus I expect there be the usual security problems and incessant updates for this and that.

I'm considering switching to Linux, but really need to understand the implications of such a switch - how will it affect things like games?

I already use as much open-source stuff as poss, Firefox, OpenOffice and so on, it'd be great to finally be rid of Microsoft once and for all!

You may want to look at dual-booting Linux and Windows together. Windows is the ubiquious standard at the minute and it is always useful to be able to boot to it when you need to use a piece of software that is not available on Linux.

New to Linux bypass for the free version of Mandriva. i might want to in my opinion set up it twin boot with abode windows, so that you've the finest of both operating structures. It does take a at the same time as to get use to it and certain that is diverse than abode windows. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, Suse and different names are merely that, the call of the distribution. there is not any longer that a lot huge difference between any of them, they share an same person-friendly base information and extremely almost an same software contained in the Open source Distributions that are free to download and use. in addition they contain diverse laptop Environments, that's actually the way they seem and what's put in in theses laptop Environments, notwithstanding it really would not count number on the grounds that what would properly be put in would properly be put in in yet another. Linux is an operating gadget you pick to personalize or set it as a lot as your needs and criteria. Open source Linux isn't a canned version the position one and all has the very similar operating gadget information put in. i does no longer swap operating structures, yet run them twin boot. meaning once you boot up a menu is displayed and also you pick to both run abode windows or Linux. I type of savour interpreting 1/2 Baked solutions about Linux. it type of feels that those who knock it have not used it lengthy sufficient to appreciate it or what it would want to do. you've Open workplace that's an option to Microsoft workplace or perhaps works with MS workplace information. For iPods and iTunes you should understand what information to position in.

Linux is ok, just be wary that it can be a box of macano at times - a build or fix it your self type thing.

You may have issues with games designed for Windows though. There is a project that looks at getting windows programs to work on Linux called WINE (Windows Emulation). You may like to see if their software project is up to running the games you want.

Linux, or any other operating system for that matter, will not guarantee trouble free computing.

do a search for Live Linux this will list many versions of Linux that you can download for free or nearly free. doing it this way you can run Linux off of your CD or DVD without touching the operating system on your machine now. this way you can see if you will like Linux or not and if you do then there are free installs of Linux as well. this is what i did. i tried different versions till i got the one i like and then i got rid of windows and went with Linux. this is just a thought for you to try to see if you would like Linux or not and if you don't then you still have your untouched windows because the live Linux runs straight off the CD or DVD. hope this helps.

Go for the Linux, go for Freedom. It looks like you are marching down that path anyway. But keep another computer for Windows. Always nice to have one handy to watch it break while the Linux machine chugs along.

I would say the most problems arise with getting drivers for your hardware such as sound cards and like that.
