unless its a medical reason..i dont understand why people allow themselves to be grossly overweight (dont just mean a stone or so over) - isnt it an uncomfortable feeling?

It has nothing to do with being lazy, stupid, or just enjoying being made to feel like a "bad person". I think it has more to do with lack of positive coping strategies for stress, anger, sadness, loneliness... The great thing about being overweight (not medical reasons) is that it can be overcome given the right tools and the desire. :)

Everyone has an image in their head of how they appear, call it your' mind's eye. You'll find fat, out of shape men picturing themselves as sexy athletic men, and good looking women pictureing themselves as fat ugly trolls. No telling what your internal image will be. Often you can look in a mirror and you will see what you think you look like, not how you really look. If you've ever seen some thin girl squalling about how fat she looks in her outfit, you know what i'm talking about.

I was average sized in high school and college. In my head, I still am. I don't FEEL fat, and I'm extremely active (you can't run a ranch, a small business, AND a full time job and not be!). I eat healthy 90% of the time. I look in the mirror, and I think I look pretty good. When I move, I don't feel fat. I can easily carry 100 pounds of horse feed over one shoulder, so I'm damn sure not weak. But then I'll get on a scale and think CRAP When did THAT happen?? For a little bit after, I'll make time to exercise and be extra careful not to eat junk food, but before long I'll forget what that scale said.

First, when we use the term overweight, are we talking about some actuarial table, which is derived from death statistics, an arbitrary scale based on the BMI, or the "average" weight of all individuals of our gender and age? Each of these numbers have certain assumptions built in.
Second, are we talking about having a "weight problem"? If so, then my weight is my problem, and it is really quite judgemental of you to tell me I have a problem. If I do not see it as a problem for me, it is not a problem. End of discussion.
People eat excessively for many different reasons, and it is not always a simple question of excessive food intake. Individuals who acknowledge they have a weight problem should consult with a physician or dietician and learn to change their eating habits. For a person with too much body fat, it may be as simple as avoiding fat in the diet. Other people with metabolic diseases like diabetes may have to control portion sizes with all foods. Exercise is important, as well, but for an adult with a weight problem, it is probably best to discuss an exercise program with your family doctor before you rush out and have an heart attack or stroke.
People on certain medications (like steroids) may have to consider changing medications as well as diet. Kidney disease can cause fluid retention and bloating which may mimic obesity. I have been told by a physician acquaintence that there are even cases of obesity in children now where it is reported they had near starvation in the uterus due to problems with the placenta, and that once they were born, they ate prodigious amounts and became overweight as infants.
For some adults, it boils down to the fact that "Twinkies" are comfort food, and they are feeding their depression or anxiety. As an over 60, fluffy person who is content with they way I am, I would prefer to enjoy my food. Avoid judgemental comments.
As to the argument that I may die prematurely because of my weight, I would meerly add that I will die happy. Please pass another Twinkie.

every one is different, not every one is lucky to have good genes, normal or better than normal metabolism - things most thin or "normal" people take for granted. Most of these people have to have some type of underlying condition. Of course they are uncomfortable, in so many ways, emotional and physical to name a few. Imagine what it would be like, to not find clothes to fit you, not be able to get into a car or board a bus.

Hey, I'm (technically) overweight, and I exercise all the time and try to eat right. (I'm not obese- I'm a size 10, but still...I'm only 22) So, I'm certainly not alowing myself to be so.
