I was on Phentermine for a while a few years back. It's not intended for long term use, just to help get the hunger under control while the person gets started on a healthy eating plan. Your body starts to build up a resistance to the effects of Phentermine after a few weeks of treatment, so if you stay on it longer than that, you'll have to increase the doseage to get anything out of it.
By the third week my sleep was wrecked. I couldn't sleep longer than 3 hours a night, if that. The lack of sleep caused my memory to start failing. I couldn't remember what I'd had for breakfast that day, and I felt sooo stupid and dull. People would ask me stuff and I'd just kinda "duh" at them, lol!
Since Phentermine has a similar chemical structure to amphetamines, taking it may cause a positive result in urine screening tests for amphetamines.
I looked this last part about the side effects up.
Mild
Blurred vision, dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, stomach upset or constipation may occur the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. Other adverse events include central nervous system effects, gastrointestinal disturbances, and changes in libido. Alcohol can increase unwanted side effects of dizziness.
Moderate
Chest pain, pounding heart, difficulty urinating, breathing difficulties or swelling while taking this medication
Severe
Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) and cardiac valvular disease have been reported in patients receiving a combination of Phentermine and Fenfluramine (Phen-fen) or dexfenfluramine. The possibility of an association between PPH and the use of Phentermine alone cannot be ruled out.

Phentermine is a sympathomimetic amine, which is similar to an amphetamine. It is also known as an “anorectic” or “anorexigenic” drug. Phentermine stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain), which increases your heart rate and blood pressure and decreases your appetite. It is one of the more effective diet pills available on the market but only with a prescription. http://pricesexposed.net/home.php?rev=reviews/Phentermine.php in 1997 after 24 cases of heart valve disease in Fen-Phen users, fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine were voluntarily taken off the market at the request of the FDA. Studies later proved that nearly 30% of people taking fenfluramine of dexfenfluramine had abnormal valve findings. The FDA did not ask manufacturers to remove phentermine from the market. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phentermine

I have taken phentermine on 3 different occasions, once 8 years ago (lost 75 lbs in 3 months), 14 months ago (lost 60 lbs in 3 months) and i just finished another prescription a little over a month ago (30 lbs in 3 months). I have had no side effects at all other than weight loss. It gave me alot of energy so I felt like exercising and I had no appetite. When you do come off of the pills you need to keep a close watch to maintain your weight or you WILL gain it back. I quit smoking and gained my weight plus some back from 8 years ago so once you get it off it is up to you to keep it off. I have not gained any back in the past year and the doctor prescribed them to me so I could drop a few pounds more and so far with a healthy diet and exercise i have maintained a good weight. But it is a good weight loss pill.

Phentermine has about a 12-week usage point, according to the FDA. That's about as long as you can take it before it stops being effective. It has been documented to have an effect of blood pressure and heart rate, including heart papatations and isomnia.
I'd suggest trying something more natural. Hoodia is pretty good. There are plenty of free trials available on the web. You can find some, as well as a brief overview of Hoodia info here:

Music forces you to eat more. According to a work by the journal Psychology in addition to Marketing, soft, classical tunes encourage you to take time over your meal, so you consume more food. So, switch off – silence can make you more aware of what you’re putting in your mouth.

Purchase smaller plates. Little crockery means portion control is really a lot easier – those diminutive parts suddenly look huge and you’ll be happier to take less.
