I was told that we cannot collect our own but must collect a lesser amount as a couple...Is this true?? Thank you..

Yes you will each get your own. However, if one dies the spouse will get whatever check amount is higher from then on.

Being married cuts down on the amount of money you will both get I have heard of couples being married for 50 years and getting divorced so there would be more money in the household
