If they havent had their first heat yet then I would say from 6 months to a year old they could have their first heat. My dog goes in about every 6 months.....and it lasts a couple weeks give or take a few days. After that you can learn when to expect it. Their cycle is kind of like ours it starts out semi heavy then gets super heavy then tapers off......I wouldnt advise keeping them inside during those times.....maybe a fenced yard....fenced yard kennel.....or garage on cooler days. There are doggie diapers you can get for that at the vet. They have little holes for the tales even. Check that out at your local vet or pet store. Also some males if they smell a bleeding female then they do crazy things like dig under fences......jump over fences......chew through wood......or even get the females to do the same. Just keep an eye on her. I have seen it happen too!

Unless it is a Basenji or New Guinea Singing Dog (the only breeds that come in heat by time of year), it is based on it's age, not time of year. Generally the first time is at 7 - 12 months of age, then every 6 months from then on.
Unless she is a breeding quality show dog, the best way to avoid the problem is have her spayed - and that is better for her health, & pet overpopulation problem overall, also.

They go into heat on average every six months. What time of the year depends on when she first went into heat. That occurs sometime between 6 months and 2 years, depending on her size, and many other factors that noone can predict. Watch for when she starts bleeding. If you check every morning before you let her out, you won't miss it. She won't be able to conceive on the first couple days of her heat cycle, so you should be safe.

when a dog goes into season depends on the dog. They do not necessarily come in heat spring and fall, and not all bitches are on a 6 month cycle. When the dog was born also plays into this.
To be safe, get your girl spayed. It will increase her life span and be easier all around.

Why not get your animals fixed then you don't need to worry about it. Much easier and less expensive than having an accidental litter. Ask any reputable breeder how much they spend on raising a litter of pups and you'll see that simply spaying her is a great idea. Not to mention helping with the pet overpopulation problem...

It is not the time of the year it is the age of your animal, starting at 6 months.

spring and fall, are the normal times, but it is hard to know before the male dogs. you will just have to keep a close eye on the male dogs, they will know first. She might smell a little differently, and have blood spotting.

Generally when they turn to about 6 months. You might think about having her spayed, then you won't have to worry.
