I took my 6 yr old to a Urgent Care facility Sat. with a 102.7 fever (with motrin) and no other symptoms at all. The PA listen to his chest and did no other Physical assessment, dx him with allergies and prescribed Claritin 10 mg po qd. By the time we got home, approximatly 30 min. later fever up to 103.8. I contacted the PA and told him of the temp increase and that it was my understanding with my training ( i am a RN, DON) that a fever that high could not only be allergies. The PA disagreed.

Sounds viral to me. i work as a nurse in an urgent Care faciltiy and we see a lot of this in children. you were smart to take your child in for a fever. Just monitor for other sx and let your PCP know of any changes. For a fever much higher, I would go to the ER for after hours care, as they will have a ped specialist on call and can bettr treat your precious little one.

You're right. I'm also a nurse. The general rule is that your body generates a fever only when there is a bacteria or virus that it needs to attack and kill, thus an infection. Unless the allergies created an infection, allergies alone will not create a fever.

Go to an E.R. STAT! Remember the P.A. is not a doctor(just a wannabe).
