Whats up with traffic planners we wait hours per month waiting at traffic lights for no reason nothing comes out of the side road we just waste time and money burning brakes and petrol waiting around for a light to change, it seems if our councils have money left after buget they spend it on traffic lights, question for you traffic planners why can`t I turn left at lights on red if nothing is coming.I suspect we would save thousands of litres of fuel and hours of waiting time.But I suspect its easier to tax people that drive into town.I bet this would`nt happen in the states.

In general, modern traffic lights can be run in a couple of ways:

* they can run isolated, with no connection to any other signals. In this case, the vehicles arriving on each leg of the intersection generally cause the signals to change.

* they can run as part of a linked system. In this case, the signals will change according to vehicles arriving on each leg of the intersection BUT! will also aim to provide progression for traffic along the major road, so they tend not to see a red light when they reach the signals. To satisfy this progression requirement, the minor road may often be forced to wait as it's considered more important to provide good flow for a large number of vehicles than to provide equitable flow when the side road may only carry a few vehicles.

In general, there will be a fixed/maximum green time allocated for each direction and that time is generally calculated so as to reduce delays for most traffic or reduce the lengths of the queues for all movements at the intersection.

The other thing is there may be faults with the detector (induction) loops in the surface of the road (or, more significantly, with the pedestrian push-buttons) and they can cause a green light to be held on longer than necessary.

Road safety experts at your local road authority will be able to provide information on how/why "left turn on red" -type movements are (dis)allowed at certain intersections. It's likely to be something to do with sight distance, obstructions, geometry of the intersection, traffic speed, etc.

A very good point....traffic lights are an ecological disaster; especially after midnight and before 5am. (They all go to constant amber in some other countries).

The Dutch have the right idea around town. They REMOVED traffic warning-signs and traffic-lights, to make the roads inherently MORE DANGEROUS.

It does seem that way doesn't it? They normally put them up in places they fear would become an accident spot. In the States, they put up fewer traffic lights (in my opinion) and erect Stop signs where we would put a mini roundabout.

Mini roundabouts are far cheaper to construct and therefore traffic lights are installed in places where it is not safe to do otherwise.

However - they do get things wrong on a few occasions!

hi haha dont know about every corner but every roundabout yes now roundabouts were invented to keep traffic flowing now they seem to make it build up ho my god i see red amber green when i sleep now they have put them on a bridge out side my house for god sake
