K = 1000
40k$ = $40,000
Normally, K used in connection with a sum of money would mean 1000. However, since this does not seem to satisfactorily answer your question, I looked for other possibilities, and I found that:
K$ (as an acronym) = "constant dollars"
http://www.acronymfinder.com/acronym.aspx?rec={973BE785-89E8-11D4-8351-00C04FC2C2BF}
"constant dollars" means:
"Dollars as if in some base year, used to adjust for the effects of inflation."
http://www.investorwords.com/1052/constant_dollars.html
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/constant%20dollars
So if that's what it means in your case, then it would be that chef makes 40 dollars per hour, and that salary is regularly adjusted for inflation. In other words, if prices rise, chef will still receive an amount of money that has the same value as 40 dollars have now.
--> 40K$ = $40 now and an amount of equivalent value in the future.

I doubt that a chef makes $40,000 an hour. You got something messed up. $40,000 doesn't seem like enough to earn for the whole year though either.
There are also 401 K plans at many companies.
40 K is $40,000.

Well, in the UK we would say 40k is 40 THOUSAND. So K is thousand. I don't think 40 thousand an hour is possible! certainly not Pounds anyway! Otherwise I'm in the wrong game - where's my cookery book??

40k = 40,960 (1k = 1 binary thousand = 1024)
- the others are confusing k (commonly used to describe computer memory size) with g (grand, commonly used to describe sums of money): 40g = 40,000
(40k$ doesn't mean anything, the symbol $ was used in an ancient computer programming language to denote a string variable.)
