I know good and well that it can be possible to spread the herpes virus even when no symptoms are present, but I also know the risk is significantly less when no symptoms are present than when a sore is present.

Here is the deal- my girlfriend has what is apparently a cold-sore on her lip, which would be caused by the herpes virus. I love her, I enjoy kissing her, but I would just asune not spread the virus. So when is it safe to kiss her? Is there a certain ammount of time I should wait until after the symptoms dissapear? Is there any other information I should know?

Any sources that can be cited would be VERY helpful, especially if it's something I can look up online. I'm just looking for some understanding of this so we know what we're dealing with.

P.S.- this is herpes of the mouth, a cold sore, not the OTHER kind. We are not sexually active, so there is no risk in that area.

It's not safe until its cleared up. And you are right, no sense in kissing her and then the two of you passing it back and forth to each other. Have her get some Abreva, it will heal faster. You can visit their website for information about this virus as well.
