This has happened to me before as a kid, and then here lately. It happened last night, but this time I could hear something as I laid there.

This happened to me often when I was a child. It has also happened a few times in my adult life (I'm 35 now).

This is secondhand, and I haven't confirmed it, but I've gotten two explanations:

1. We are actually somewhere halfway between being asleep and being awake - and we're only awake enough to incorporate actual background noise into some kinda dream state.

2. The mechanism that keeps us in bed (i.e. from sleepwalking) is sometimes slow to "turn off" so we're awake and waiting for our body to catch-up.

If I have time to search the internet later, I will look into this and hopefully find an answer with a reference.

This quite normal, this is called Sleep paralysis. Where in the person wakes up, but can’t move. We can all this a disturbance in coming out of a dream. While dreaming, the muscles are paralysed by the brain to keep the dreamer safely in place. In the sleep-paralysis the person is conscious, but the paralysing-mechanism has not yet been ‘switched off’.

certain, I actually have and that's totally scary. that's honestly noted as sleep paralysis and also you'll learn it on the internet link less than. In West Virginia the former-timers noted as it 'moon-struck'. They believed it befell to particular human beings in the adventure that they fell asleep in a room the position moonlight shone with the help of the window onto the sleeper.

Its called sleep paralysis and it happens mostly when you are under stress. Just lay there and don't fight it and relax. Its related to a nonfatal heart disease call mitrovalve prolapse. If you have ever been diagnosed with a murmur thats probably what you have, if not have it checked out by a dr.

You were not fully awake. Youwere still in a deep sleep and your body did not catch up to your brain activity.
