A close friend's cat got outside a few weeks back and was taken to the shelter. The cat was scanned for a micro-chip and one turned up on her. My friend had registered all of his information with Avid before he moved to his current home. His ex-girlfriend went in and changed all the information with Avid to her address, after he had done this.

He has recent invoices for the cat from the local vet, proof that he's had the cat for the last 12-years, and that she's not been in the picture for six-to-eight-years.

She now has the cat. What can he do? Can he sue Avid and the ex-girlfriend? What are the best steps to get his cat back as soon as possible? Help!!!

Suing Avid and the ex-girlfriend is what would be classified as a petty lawsuit.

Avid should not have taken his name off the cat. If I were him, I would go to Avid's CEO and let him/her know what had transpired. I'm sure they have a record of who changed the information. The CEO may request that he fax the information he has pertaining to the cat for evidence purposes, so it can be changed back appropriately. Then once it is back in your friend's name, I would call the police department and tell them she stole the cat and that he wants it back. As long as she does not have any transfer of ownership, she is toast. And in the mean time, the person that illegally transferred the information to her name will either be fired or get reprimanded. This is the way I would go.

Get the B*&$# arrested for theft and fraud (changing the AVID info) and sue her for what ever you can including psychological distress and punitive damages. IMO pet thieves are down there with child molesters and rapists!
Good Luck!

Also sue AVID for allowing her to change the information without confirming that she was the cats real owner!

I would try and threaten AVID for changing the information without your knowledge, call the police and make a report.

His best bet would be to sue her for the cat. If the courts decide in his favor then he would have a better chance for suing AVID.

I would call the police first. There needs to be a report of theft before anyone will do anything. & I would try to appeal to her compassion. She may have changed the info when she was bitter & wanted revenge. good luck!

Contact a lawyer.. I smell a lawsuit!

As long as he has all the proof and documents backing his story then he should win- Hopefully he gets his cat back
