When I ordered a Dell Inspiron 6000 last year, they did not send the discs by default. There was an option to send a recovery disc for an option $10 fee. When I got the disc, it has a generic blue dell label and said Windows XP Professional on top of it, but the contents on the CD were the same as any other XP disc for the most part (only a few Dell OEM logo and apps added). I used it in nLite to create a custom installer CD and it worked just fine.

You have a restore disk or a restore partition on your hard drive. Dell gives you what you pay for. However, the key on the bottom of your notebook will work with any normal windows installation disk you can find. If you know someone that has the same version of windows, just borrow their disc and copy it.

Yes you should have gotten a WinXP restore disc with your system. Call Dell and complain.

Most computers manufacturers hand out 'restore disks' these days instead of proper copies of Windows to save themselves money, its a total load if sh1t basically because you've paid for a Windows license as part of your machine so phone them up and hassle them into sending you a proper copy.

They did send it to you. Its a pink or purple or maroon colored CD... it usually says RESTORE or that it has WINDOWS XP on it...
If they did not send it to you, you need to ask them for it, DOUBLE CHECK the box to make sure its not stuck somewhere...
It does not look like a typical XP CD when it comes with DELL.
Also did you order your DELL with an OS or without an OS< because if you custom ordered it without an OS you will not get the cd.

They get by this by giving you recovery CD's. You can call an order one from Dell at an extra cost. This is why Dell,s cheap computers are so cheap.

I called then because mine was missing too. The lady I talked to was nice about it. I think they omit it because most people have no clue what its for. Hope everything works out!

Actually, you are not. That is the type of license that they sold you. Sometimes, they will sell you a set of reinstall disks, for a nominal fee, of course. I'd send off for them if I were you.
