Explain the reasons you don't own one if they are valid. Then use alternative educational materials....she doesn't have to have it. Just because all her friends have it doesn't mean it's good....remember the same TV has shows like Bratz

Well, she can read Dora books. There are better things in life than TV. We wouldn't have time to do the things we like if we were watching TV all the time. Instead of watching a nature show, go for a walk. Read books and play. She shouldn't be too upset, that's not really what kindergartners talk about at recess.

If you have a computer, then you can buy the DVD's of some shows and let her watch them.

I would just tell her the truth - you don't approve of having a television, and you would rather spend time with her in other ways than watching television. I am willing to bet that your kid will be envied when she is telling everyone how she and her mom got to go somewhere special, or played games all night and had so much fun, and this is more than just a monthly occurance. You will be the cool mom!

Good for you!

We were TV free for the first 4 years of my son's life, then we phased in g rated movies and educational series- not baby stuff, but DVDs from Discovery store on ocean life, animals, etc. My son never cared that other kids watched tv. We had more time as a family to do fun stuff because we weren't chained to a TV addiction. Our son still liked to read the books that had the same characters as tv shows, and thus still went in for all the target merchandising these shows do.

The real problem was when the kids get old enough to go to others homes and are exposed to TV. Will they know what you would allow them to watch? will they respect that? It got to the point where our son wanted to go to anyone's house to watch TV instead of play!!

We recently bit the bullet and got a Dish. We still supervise what the kids watch and plan in advance what will be watched so they don't miss their favorites but I could live without it again if we needed to. The kids know that every hour they spend watching TV is one less hour they spend playing, learning or having a good time outside.

Good luck to you!

Its very simple, just like somet families have one parent, some are raised by their grandparents, some have nobody and are raised by state. Some are rich and some are poor.

What I think you need to do is stress to the child that your family isn't like "Johnnies" and that okay to be different. Children grow up with whats normal as what their parents show them, show them a loving family, and they will want sometimes what others have, but with the proper motivation they can learn that we don't always get what we want.

As long as you have activities for your child, and do things with her this should never come up.

The TV can become an all controlling device, and I applaud you for keeping it out of your home.

Well, I'd suggest outlining your reasons (at a child's level) of why you don't watch TV. That said, there are plenty of good TV shows for kids that are educational-- e.g. Sesame Street, Discovery Kids, TLC. Do kids really talk about TV much these days?

Like many things in life, balance is the key.

Go buy a TV. Dora the Explorer and Seseme Street and things are very educational and helpful in the overall development of a child. All that you are doing is depriving her of more education. Just because you do watch it doesn't mean that she should have the luxury of being about to. YOU JUST DON'T WATCH IT if you don't want to.

Just tell her that you don't have a T.V. plain & simple. Same reason you would give ffor why you don't have a playstation or a birt bike or any other luxury item.

If she wants to set up play dates to watch those shows then help her do that.

Most of those shows can be purchased and watched as movies on your computer.

Then count your lucky stars that she doesn't care if she gets a plain pink back back or the twice-the-price "Dora" backpack.

Explain why not. But there are educational benefits to exposing your child to tv. you can supervise the shows, etc.

Just like internet you need to just be aware. A child can link with a serial rapist or killer on the net, just like that.

what i'm trying to say , there's good and bad in everything you just try to protect them all you can.
