Moses killed that Egyptian because the Egyptian was beating an Israelite, such as what moses himself was. For the Egyptians had evil entreated the Israelites. I'm not sure about how long he was gone for. I'll read my bible and get back 2nd-pt.of quest. They wandered through the wilderness for 40 yrs.

1. He was gone long enough to make himself sufficiently useful to Reuel, the priest of Midian, to be given one of his daughters to wife and to have had two sons with her before the Burning Bush episode that sent him back to Egypt. So give it a timeframe of 3 to 5 years.
2. When the Israelites continued contumacious and refused to enter Canaan for fear of the natives, God punished them by making them wanderers in the wilderness for 40 years. A popular time period and probably more symbolic than literal. What God said was that they weren't gonna step foot in the Promised Land until all the generation (meaning the adult males) who refused to go be conquering heros were dead and in their graves. Then Moses could lead the children of Israel to their new home. Presumably the younger generation would still be young enough to have the juices needed to fight for their new lands, cause it's a lead-pipe cinch they were gonna hafta. See Joshua. Therefore give that a timeframe of 25 (a generation) to 35 (making sure the Good Ol Boys were dead) years.
