I was talking to one of my black friends today she is a feminist and reckons, that white feminists do nothing to tackle racism, and that they only paid lip service to the anti-racism struggle, when feminists so often stress the importance of sisterhood, with regards to racism, the sisterhood is nowhere to be seen...i wonder if anyone could answer why that is?...or is the question too controversial?

Feminism may not be about racism, but what my friend was saying is that white feminist prefer to sweep this issue under the carpet, and are luke warm about tackling racism since this would require a direct challenge to the power structure which grants them so many social, political, and economic privilidges, she was telling that she believes white women stand in a power relation as oppressers of black women....these are her views i'm just curious to hear what you think about them.

I'll try my best to answer. I wouldn't say I'm a feminist. Yes, I believe in promoting confidence in women and I believe in equal rights for women as well as men. But each woman has their own personality and they will do want they want to as far as pursuing friendships with women of different backgrounds and races. Establishing a worldwide sisterhood is in itself a wonderful idea, but I think that it's not very realistic. I think each woman should focus on building her own mini support system first - a few good close friends are what everyone should have. At the same time I think that in general women need to start respecting on another on a greater level. Far too often we judge one another or dislike someone simply because we view them as a threat or competition. That's where we get the reputation for being caddy and manipulative. If more women would act decent and intelligent and stop wearing shirts like, "He's only with you because he hasn't met me yet", I think we'd be taken more seriously and make more progress as far as how the world sees us. I dunno that's a hard one.

Your friend is wrong. The Women's Studies department at my university has a couple of classes on women of colour. We're focusing on ALL women, not individual races. That comes later.

On the scale of 1 to 10, I'm about an 8.5. I'm militantly pro-equality and I dislike men on the whole, but I do have many male friends (I like them on an individual basis) and I like sex.

I don't like feminism. Alot of feminists think that they made things easier for women, but in actuality, they made things alot harder. It really peeves me off....We have just as many limiations now as we did in the 50's, even though it may not seem so.

Feminism is about promoting women further ahead of men. It has nothing to do with racism. It's about sexism.
