1. We need to understand how built up tensions and ambitions between alliances can lead to war, (and how this was not just any war, but the first war to have global reach).
2. The conflict was significant for the staggering loss of life. That is reason enough for its own sake, but we can study the significance of that result as compared to modern conventional warfare, and changing notions of what is considered to be success.
3. Technology--It was the first major war where 3 dimensions played a significant role (airplanes and balloons)
4. WWI played a strong role in leading to WWII and shared unresolved causes and conditions with it (German desperation, humiliation, and continuing ambition), although it in no way justifies WWII.
The overall answer is the same as all history--remember or be doomed to repeat it.

i would want to remember as well that the year 1913 was consider the year of peace by the League of Nations(known as the United Nations) and it is the first time ever in history that the whole world was involved in a war of this scale and magnitude.
Throughout history there has always been civil war but when the whole world got involved in war in 1914 it was definitely something to be remembered.
Questions to ask would be: How did it happen? Who were the countries involved? Why was there a need to fight? What was accomplished in the end? Does the circumstances that led to that 1st World War still exist today?
Just my thoughts on it. Enjoy searching the history books and asking those who lived in those times and see if you can conclude what really took place.

Just like any other war we fought in, there are alot of reasons to remember it. Like you said to remember the sacrifices of all the fallen soldiers preotectg our freedom. Some others might include that that war was considered the war to end all wars. Up to that point majority of countrys still fought with lines and marching towards each other. With WW 1 we had a tremendous break through in technology. In WW1 the full automatic machine gun was first used on wide scale, the bi plane was used in dog fights and to drop bombs, grenades were developed, flame throwers, chemical warfare, tanks and so many other technologies changed warfare forever. That war was the last time the U.S. used horses in battle. I forget the name of the peace treaty with Germany, but that is a good reason too. It said they were no longer allowed to build a big military and for the most part they adheard to that until of course Hitler came into power in the mid 30's.

WW1 was a turning point that yielded up Old Europe and cast out the Old Monarchy's. The foolish decisions cast in stone the foot path to the Next World War. It was the birth place of the Ideologies of Nazism, Stalin-ism and of young soldiers like George S. Patton. Without World War One the 1800's would have never ended and the 1900's would never have begun. We and all people that have Honor always remember their war dead and we remember ours.

I guess the ultimate reason for the US to enter WW1 was the threat to shipping in the Atlantic , The sinking of the Lusitania for example. The Allies France and Britain desperately wanted the US in. But the discovery of a telegram to Mexico offering them support to come in to the war on the German side Angered Woodrow Wilson and American opinion and thus America declared war on Germany on April 6 1917

It seemed to start over a silly reason. So in the future, countries should remember to do a lot more talking before we declare war. On the other hand, we tried to appease Hitler leading up to World War II, and finally realized he was bent on destruction no matter what.

We could remember WW1 for a lot of reasons but the primary ones remain
1. The losers were punished severely for putting the world in a situation of war. It not only did not root cause of the war, but also created a rift between the losing nation and victors, but also sowed the seeds of revenge and caused extemist to spring up
2. It failed to bring about a global body or organisation to oversee/settle disputes between nations
3. War always causes loss of innumerable lives, whether fighting bravely or losing bravely

Remember it because WW 1 was billed as " The War To End All Wars "
It was the catalyst for the start of WW2 in Europe.
A lesson was supposed to be learned, yet all we do is fight.
It never ends, history repeats itself.

it is part of history and the foundation of our nation today,,, the same as any war... think about the sacriface these fine soliders made for us, they left their families and went to a forigen nation, because trhere were some bad guys who would like to see us gone ,,along with some other nations,,,,
the number one reason to honor any solider is,,because of the honor they have shown to their nation.

If it weren't for the Men and Women that fought in WW1 you wouldn't have the freedoms that you have today... We should have learned from their miss takes, but we didn't, that's why there was a WW2 and if sh!t keeps going the way it is there will be a WW3... we will never learn...
