I park my car away from other vehicles in an almost empty car park so I get more excercise, and don't have to worry about hitting another car when I open the door. When I come back to my car someone has usually parked either side of me - even if the car park is still empty. Is our herding instinct really that strong?

Well, cars are metal, metal is magenetic, and magnetic stuff attracts!

They did park their cars away from yours but as soon as they turned their backs, their cars we pulled up to yours magnetically!

Well....thats my theory anyway!

I have also noticed this phenomenon. I like to park far away from others because I have a salsa red, new beetle (2007) and I would not want any irresponsible person to scratch my car nor do I want to sneak out of the car as the door of my car is way big for the body of my car and if I open it irresponsible when I park it in between cars, then I may be scratching the other car.
This is a wonderful question but I have no answer for it sorry.

It is either herding instinct, or the others want exercise as well. There is a chance that the cars simply steer themselves next to your's because it put out a signal heard only by other cars. It was lonely and wanted company.

Some people assume that because you parked away from everyone else that you feel your vehicle is more special than all the other vehicles. So these people will park next to you on purpose just to get on your nerves.

I tend to park next to cars that look better than mine. That way, if a car thief comes along, they're more likely to pinch the better looking car.

i prefer to park mine by someones elses, its an easier guide when reversing, and for security, i feel the lonesome car would be more of a target for theft and vandalism
