It seems to me that God has one purpose : He provides believers with a purpose in life (i.e. to praise him and be in awe and terror of him, depite the fact that He is a gracious and benevolent being) and an answer to the question "What happens when we die?". They need to have an answer because they can't believe that we're just like any other living thing; just here for a fleeting moment then extinguished like a light. You live your life according to His rules, keeping Him happy and your reward is guaranteed. Therein lies the problem. If everyone followed the same God, there would be moral and spiritual equivalence everywhere, and this would not suit the human condition, which is to gain supremacy over your competitors (for whatever you like - knowledge, oil, water, insight, truth etc). It's why Communism didn't work; everyone got apathetic and the top brass got corrupt. Just the same in religion. So everyone doesn't follow the same God, which enables them to claim that 'My God's better than your God', which is the truth about most of the strife in the world today. For everyone to be equal and loving requires that those with the power, possessions and advantages lose some of them to advantage those without.
Even if they do worship the same God, trouble is caused by factions saying 'My way of worshipping God is better than your way of worshipping God. This is the cause of strife between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland, and Sunnis and Shias in the Middle East, Jews and Arabs in Palestine etc. etc. It's also just tribal like following a soccer team or belonging to the Freemasons. People need clubs to belong to.
Back to your question, though. God was invented at the same time as Man realised that he couldn't do anything about the fact he/she was going to die, and needed a 'fear factor' to keep order. So, he's as old as Mankind. A more recent 'fear factor', also invoked by someone who's realised he's not going to be able to avoid getting his butt kicked in an election, is the War on Terror. But, despite being delusional, he's not God.
God's just a way of mankind coping with death.

God was not born. He created all things. This is one of those questions especially non-believers love to pose. It is a big question, but God is more than BIG. Someday, we may know the answer, along with all those other questions we would love to know. However, God created man, and he does not intend for us to know everything. Wouldn't life be boring if we did know everything? I hope your teacher isn't disappointed with the homework answers. It's probably just to make you think, because there's no way you could give a definate answer.

Tell your teacher that's a question unanswerable with the limited intelligence of humans. S/he is obviously just curious to see how imaginative you can be. I don't believe the question has any educational worth at all, do you? And if she still insists on an answer she should be prepared to come up with an answer too!
If you were that clever you wouldn't be her student would you? And is she were knowldgeable enough to know the answer she certainly wouldn't be just a teacher!

She wasnt born, she was thought up.
She appears by reference lots of times in the fictional tome called 'the bible', and variants thereof.
Its a question that would have the same answer as to when Harry Potter was born.. another piece of fiction.

When man evolved to become self aware and realized that he didn't know the answers to some of the questions he had.
So- he made up 'god'.
Where did the flower come from? God
Why does it rain? God
Where did I come from? God

God was not born, he just came into existence. According to the Bible he has been here forever. He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. No one knows when God came to be. Only he knows and he has told us as much as we need to know. Research your Bible.

God said, "I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end"... It is difficult to grasp, but He IS the beginning...
