I am a native New Yorker, now living in CA. As for hotels, I'd suggest using a travel booking site like Hotwire.com, Travelocity.com, or Priceline.com that allow you to view the hotels and their amenities along with their proximity to local attractions and sites. You did not specify why you were going or what your interests are, so using these sites would not only allow you to personalize your experience, but save you some $$$. I've used all for years, and they are essential in helping to find a nice place to stay that's close to public transportation and attractions. Depending on what part of New York you are visiting, there are so many things to see. I am from western NY, and am awed by it's beauty this time of year. Take a camera and extra memory cards so you don't miss a thing. Visit the I LOVE NY website for tourism info and tips to maximize your trip (the link is below in the source box)
PS~NY is VERY humid in the summer, pack light non-clingy clothes prepare to be HOT! (A nice water park could be a lovey break to the heat)
GOOD LUCK and have a great time!

Actually, we got a great rate at a Marriott courtyard once in NY, it depends on the weekend you go as to the rates. Be sure to make a reservation for the pretheater dinner special at the Four Seasons, which is a five star restaurant and very romantic. If you are seated by 6:15 you get a full dinner from appetizer to dessert for $65 a person. Call 212-754-9494 and ask to be seated in the pool room. The best bargain in town but jacket and tie required. Get your theater tickets at the half price ticket booth or you can find discounts on line for a lot of Broadway shows.
Ride the Staten Island ferry, go shopping at Century 21 (across the street from the WTC). It's discount and very stylish. Metropolitan Museum of Art has everything-art, knights in armor, mummies, a small Egyptian temple and a nice place to have lunch. It's a full day experience. http://www.metmuseum.org/
Eat dim sum in Chinatown for brunch. Go to the Bronx Zoo. It's by donation on Wednesdays, other days it's $14

Stay somewhere in Midtown this way you are close to everything and you can take cabs or subways everywhere.
Definitely check out Central Park, The Museum of Natural History, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met).
Avoid Times Square at all costs. It's overpriced and overcrowded.
Check out Soho and Greewich village for cool restaurants, shopping, bars, clubs, etc.
If you have enough time, take a trip to the outer boroughs (either Brooklyn or Queens) to see how real New Yorkers live.

Have fun!!

If you want to see a man doing something purely for the love of it, go see Woody Allen play his clarinet at the Carlyle Hotel. Cost $75 a seat but it's worth it. This takes place any Monday night he's in town.

Also, in Little Italy, eat at Angelo's. I like the Veal Marsala.

Also, Carmines, on Time SQ has great Calamari.

Also, John's Pizza, also near Time SQ. has great NY style pizza.

Also, TKTS is the best place to buy Theater tickets on Time SQ. You'll see it as you walk around TS.

Circle Tours will take you around the Island. It's worth it on a clear day.

My wife and I like to shop at Strawberry's some.

Avoid the Empire State building. Security is so strict it takes forever to get to an elevator. Bummer.

The Broadway Inn is a nice little B&B just off TS

I'm from Texas but, as you can see, I love NYC.

There's so much to do in NY.

If you are into gaming, Astroland Amusement Park at Coney Island has much to offer for the adventurous gamer.

The Nintendo World Store is another wonderful attraction that is located at 10 Rockefeller Plaza.

Are you into nature? If so, you may want to check out the Bronx zoo. The Bronx Zoo is the largest urban zoo in the U. S. and is open 365 days a year.

Like Museums? Perhaps one of the neatest things to do in New York City is to pay a visit to the FDNY Fire Zone. The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art is another great place to spend a few hours and learn about the many different aspects of art, comics, and cartoons and what kind of role they have played in recording the history of our world.

I can go on and on and on. there's just so much to do in Ny!

Oh wow, there's so much to do. I'd recommend seeing a broadway show, or even one off broadway. Or you could go to a baseball game. Of course shopping is always at the top of my list. The Central Park Zoo is really cool too. Sorry I'm not a hotel kind of girl, that's what friends dorms are for!

Check out prices on the Hotel Pennsylvania across the street from Madison Square Garden. I've always found it to have good prices (it also offers parking for an extra charge).

Mind your business! :) and you'll be alright. It's not so bad from what people tell you. I would say don't drive, because New York drivers/ especially the taxis will eat you alive. use the subways or taxis or like most of us, just walk.

O yeah also, hit up Little Italy, no one will bother you there. Good food
