YOU need to go back to your bank and ASK which card they issued to you with your checking account (and it could be either of these)
1. IF they issued an ATM Card -- it can ONLY be used at ATM Machines ... and NOT as a Debit card for Purchases from the Stores or anything at your college/school.
Given that it is ONLY working at the ATM .. then I would assume that this is the way they issued you your card.
2. IF it is a TRUE Debit Card, it will have either a MasterCard or Visa Logo on it, and it will be able to be used not just at ATMs, but also at Stores, the College, etc. And .. if you 'forget' your PIN Number, it can also be processed like a Credit Card too.
GO BACK to your bank. ASK at the Customer Service Desk to LOOK UP your Account Information and see what TYPE of Card they issued to you.
When you find out the answer (and it is NOT a Debit Card), ASK for them to ISSUE a Debit Card connected to your account.

Some of the student accounts give you an ATM card only - it only works at the ATM, and cannot function as a debit card or credit card. Double-check that your card is indeed a debit card, not just an ATM card.

Does it have a visa logo on it? If not, it won't work. If no visa logo then it might only be an ATM card. It would still look like a debit card, but you wouldn't be able to use it like one. If you are over 18 with a checking account, ask your bank to issue you a debit card. Then it will work everywhere visa is accepted.

interior the U. S., you should probably use your ATM card in a keep see you later as they truly take “debits.” Grocery shops for instance take both debit playing cards and charge playing cards. Retail shops, eating places, those places many times don’t. in case you employ your straight forward ATM card you employ it with PIN get appropriate of entry to. that is named a level of Sale or POS cost. That’s the cardboard section. maximum banks although, limit POS from affordable prices so once you've it purely to a affordable prices it ought to no longer artwork. more suitable importantly, there is mostly a regularly happening POS decrease heavily lower than a debit/examine card. typically $three hundred-$500 inspite of your stability. ultimately, they could price you a POS fee of about 0.30 in step with transaction. So, common, even if if you may do it, it heavily isn't the type of excellent idea.

Sounds like you do not have a debit card, just an ATM card. I just have an ATM card, and it cannot be used anywhere except at an ATM machine.
