It's amazing that you've received 9 answers so far and everyone's pulling numbers out of thin air. Here's the numbers straight from Canon:
On average, the A430's pictures at best image quality (Large, Superfine) are 2.1 MB each. That's about 470 pictures on a 1 GB memory card.
At medium picture quality (Medium2, Fine), pictures are around 320 KB each, for approximately 3100 pictures on a 1 GB card.
And if you were to fill the whole card with high quality movies, you'd get about 24 minutes worth.

1 gigabyte memory cards can hold a variety of pictures all depending on wht setting you put it on. I have a canon camera and it can hold over 5,000 pictures on the lowest quality setting and over 1,500 on the highest setting. When you go to the menu you can change what wuality pictures you want. It is wise to buy a 1 gigabyte memory card as no matter what camera they are used in they usually can hold up to at least 1,000 pictures. Reminder that videos take up more space than a picture so it's wise to watch how much video you use and conserve memory.

Hope this helps you.

Here's a helpful chart from Lexar Media:

The actual number will vary depending on the resolution (# of megapixels) and level of compression. The camera also tracks the number of shots remaining in the lower right corner of the LCD.

Mine holds about 390 pics with the resolution set to about 5.3 MP.
I own a kodak...but it should all be the same.

Also, my max resolution is 6.3, but I've found that setting the camera to 5.3 makes almost no difference in quality and lets me hold many more pics on there.

The way I see it. Your camera has 4megapixels. Shooting at your best setting of 4MP a 1 GB card should give you about 500 to 510 shots.

I don't know for sure how many, but you may be able to put the card in your camera, turn it on and it should tell you how many pictures you can take. When I put one of my cards in my camera, it will tell me how many photos I can take.

I believe if you have it on a normal setting then it should hold around 840. My 512MB card holds 420, so I was just multiplying by two. :)
