Most apartments have a 20 lb limit...so you'll want to stay below that when the pup is full grown. Check your local shelter to see what is available...I found this site extremely helpful when I was looking for the right breed of dog for my family.

For an apartment as small dog is best. A dog in the toy breed is what you should look into. You can go to the pound and fine some really sweet dogs that are a little older or you can get a puppy but puppies will be very energectic. Some breeds like pugs, lhaso apso, shih tzu s are good. Shelties are great too. They are not a toy breed but they are fairly calm and reserved, but they do need to be able to get out and run alittle when you get home.

From my observation energy levels can vary from dog to dog within a species. You might want to consider getting a dog that is over 1 year old (no hyper puppy stage) where you can see his/her developed personality. Petfinder is a great place to start finding a pet that matches your lifestyle. All dogs need to have space to move around. If you get a big dog you are going to have to take him/her for longer walks/park time. I chose the Maltese breed for an appartment dog, but there are some hyper Maltese. Sometimes getting an older dog can be a great idea - you more or less know what you are going to get.

Well when it comes to small dogs.....most of them pack alot of energy for such a small package. Yorkies are very cute but make sure you keep their hair trimmed and neat.....also cairn terriers are so adorable and they arent too energetic.....not extremely small that you lose them in your apartment......but my aunt loves mini doxens and hers plays alot but he doesnt jump up in people's laps when they are over or anything.....so go that way. they are so very affectionate......just make sure you keep in mind that they need to know that you are dominant because they will take charge and have you wrapped around their little foot and that can cause problems later. Also they need special food for little dogs and often vitamins and smaller toys, smaller treats and be prepared for potty training if you get a puppy. Whatever little dog that you choose I'm sure will be great. Do your research though and find as much information you can on the dog that you select that you know as much about their temperment and their health and common problems in their breed.

Low energy? Basset Hound or a Pug. You might also look into an Austrailian Sheep Dog - a little higher in energy but nut crazy at all like a Lab would be.

Check the AKC's web site for good descriptives of all different breeds.

Definitely a pug. I have a tiny 2 room apartment and it is more than enough for my pug. Pug puppies tend to be a little energetic but still less than other dogs. Not much of a guard dog, but excellent entertainment and the best companion imaginable.

A small breed would be ideal. Don't get anything that is too yappy, you might get complaints from the neighbors. If you want a dog that doesn't require a lot of training and isn't too active, you could get an older dog.

I would try to visit a shelter or animal rescue in your area. I'm sure you could find many small dogs, and some that are a little older so not as energetic. You can tell the staff there what you are looking for, and they can help find your perfect match!

I have a 13 yr. old miniature poodle that I got from a humane society, you need to see what size dogs they allow, as some say no weight or size limit and some do give you a weight/size limation.
