My boyfriend and I have reserved rental cars for when we are in Hawaii in February, but the car rental service said they would have to put the debit card through a screening process to see whether it meets the criteria necessary. The debit card has a VISA label on it, but I don't know what the screening process will be looking for. I just want to be prepared in case it doesn't work out. The problem is, we don't have credit cards, so we can't use that as a back up, and they only accept either debit or credit. I'm really worried about this. I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this situation and if so, whether it worked out with the debit card. I'm hoping to hear from people who have used their debit cards to rent in Hawaii. Thanks!

I've heard you can only use credit cards. All the rental car companies have free 800 numbers--- call them and find out for sure.

I was in Maui last September and used my Debit Card to rent a car... There was no problem... The only problem that I ran into was with the hotel. I stood at the Royal Lahaina, and they require a credit card for incidentals. I only had a debit, so they debited $200 and then refunded the money at the end of my stay. SO you may want to check with your hotel as well.

I have never tried to use a debit card in Hawaii, but I have in San Francisco. They would not take it. If I were you, I would go to the website of the company you are renting from and then look at their policy. You can also call. Definitely get this straightened out before you leave because you don't want to have to deal with that when you get there.

Also, I do know if you are under 25, they have much stricter policies.

Dont know if this is the same, but in Connecticut when I rented a car they let me use my debit card, but they put a hold on $200 of it (same as if you rented with cash)...they asked me to submit it early to be put thru the screening process, but I did not and they still took it. I think the screening process is verifying it is a credit/debit card and not just a debit...

specific, despite if it isn't the comparable as a "visa or credit card" as all human beings else says whilst renting a vehicle. specific, you ought to purchase issues with it on credits, yet for a condo vehicle, they're going to ask for a deposit whilst booking a vehicle with a debit card.
