depends on the type of person u are. For example, if u are a busy person with little time or not willing to walk and walk and walk an active dog, then getting an active dog is not going to work. Any dog will, if you are threatened, have a go at a prowler. In my local town a Dachaund (sp) fort off a would be rapist. And he is just a wee little dog. As you are a female you would be better off, as a general rule, to get a male dog and the opposite for a man.

You need to get a dog that fits your lifestyle most importantly. If you work all day, and the dog would be alone, ... that narrows your choices down quite a bit. Not too many dogs will be happy left alone all day. If you are home, then the skys the limit. Dogs are protective of those they love. So choose a dog that YOU love, and he will unconditionally love you back....and the protection will follow. Having a dog that will actually 'attack' someone is not what you want. Dogs can't determine between a friend or foe when someone just walks in the door, they need to be trained that way. Talk to a local vet, ... they will help you out the best. Good luck!

anything big. lol.Best thing to do is make your house safe. Get window and sliding door locks that are keyed. Bars across the bottom of sliding doors and windows. And those alarms that go off when they hear a noise. And never trust anyone. If a prowler wants youi bad enough, he will shoot the dog - yeah its a deterrant but sometimes its not worth the effort unless you really want a pet. Dont get a dog just for the sake of protection.

Depends totally on the size place you live in and how much time you can devote to exercise. I've always had shepherds or pound puppy shepherd mixes ranging from over 100 lbs down to 35 lbs. If you live in a small place get a small dog. Most all except the besinji(sp) bark and that's what you need, a noise maker. I had Max - a heinz 57 shepherd mix rescued from the street, perfect medium size apt dog - no one would come near him when he started his "protective" growl, and he actually, in May of 1993 abort a break in at my house when I was alone on a Friday night! Scared the cop too but that's another story! If you want a purbreed, all of the posters have ideas, but honestly, I think I would go to the pound, talk to the help about personality traits of the dogs, they know since they see them daily and then find one you have a chemistry with. I don't know what I would have done without my "mixed up" Max, even though I love my pure Shepherds as well! PS My mother had a border collie mix from a local rescue, once again, perfect medium size dog, protective as all get out, looks sweet as pie, but if she doesn't know you..... all of the border collie traits appear and she really protects her herd! Have fun finding the perfect "mate"!

Well small ankle biters really arent scary and are very unlikely to keep away a "prowler"........I would say a labrador or german shepard.....or some sort of huskey dog.......I am more of a boxer.....mastiff......pitbull.......bulldog girl though myself........those are the dogs that if I was breaking into someone's house and I saw a big mean looking pitbull staring at me looking like he was gonna chew my arm off.......well......I would put the word out for other "prowlers" to not stalk that house again...........it is your personal preference though........all breeds of dog have the capability of being very good pets and most will get defensive of their property if a stranger comes around. Dogs are one of the best judges of character there is. Trust their instinct. Just remember dogs will give back 10 times the love you give them.

I am personally a proud pit bull owner, and I've seen them mentioned a few times on this string....IF you decide you want a Pittie (best dog in the world!!!) PLEASE do you homework, and understand that they have VERY special needs compared to other dogs, and they come with their own set of rules. Feel free to e-mail me if you are interested, and I will coach you as best I can, but understand that a properly dispositioned pit bull will be the worst guard dog you have ever seen in your life, lol...Truth be told, if you want a dog, get a dog to have a companion, not to have a security blanket. Dogs actually are very poor deterrents....if you want to make your home safer against prowlers/burglars, think more towards security systems, good lighting, and reducing "hiding places" around your home (like bushes, trees, etc too close to your windows).

I have to be honest and say that getting a dog because your afraid of prowlers is really not a good answer. A dog can not protect you from a gun, and more than likely not from a club. I would turn to getting a can of mace. burgler proof your home. And always stay on the buddy system. You may also think about taking slef defence course's
I feel as a mother that it is my job to protect my dogs. not them me.

I think just about any dog would be fine. Any dog you get and raise will love you and be defensive/protective of you. And most prowlers will be turned away by the sound of a barking dog...they don't know what kind of dog is barking. I have a beagle who has kept me great company and he has a ferocious sounding bark! I would just go to your shelter and pick out a good medium to large size dog. Good luck!

Any dog will attach to you. Any dog will want to protect you.

Go to the shelter and find one you like. Don't be breed specific. Trying to find a certain breed. Most every breed has been so overbred by puppymills and Back yard breeders that you aren't going to get the the qualities you desire in a breed. Just because a breed stats that they have certain qualities doesn't mean everyone of those dogs posses them. Everyone of them has their own separate identity and attitude towards different things.

Go to a shelter or rescue where they have already been seen by a vet had shots and hopefully already altered for a minimal adoption fee. They are more likely to work with you if you have any problems with the dog.

If the dog is to be an inside dog, there is no better watchdog than the Std Poodle, they don't shed nor do they have a doggie odor. For an outside dog, I recommend a Labrador retreiver. Both are very intelligent & easily trainable as well as being very loyal & affectionate. Good luck.
