It goes with out saying that renting a car is the best way to get around southern CA. If you have a choice fly into LA/Ontario Airport which is much closer to the Coachella Valley than LAX. If you really want to fly close in you could fly to palm springs but most flights require a change at LAX. Mostly that option isn't worth the extra money.
Plan on spending about 2 to 2 and a half hours driving to Indio from LAX. Try not to go during the afternoon rush hour on Friday as that could potentially double your trip. You can get shared ride vans from Ontario airport (see super shuttle for example) but from LAX you have to use a service like Palm springs shuttle

I'm assuming you already have tickets into LAX. (If not Ontario or Palm Springs would be more convenient ariports.)
What you'll probably need to do is get to downtown L.A. and then take Greyhound to Indio.
Getting to downtown L.A. is easy, and it takes about an hour. Take the "G" shuttle at LAX (free) to Aviation station. Buy a day pass ($3) from the vending machine, and catch the green line train (destination = Norwalk). Transfer to the blue line at Rosa Parks station (just walk downstairs and across the park-and-ride). Take a northbound blue line train (destination = Metro Center or Downtown L.A.) and ride to the end of the line. You'll end up at the Metro Center subway station downtown. You can probably catch a taxi there. (You could also walk east on 7th Street for about a mile, but the neighborhood gets rapidly worse the further east you go.) If no taxis appear to be there, go back to the subway and catch the red line to Union Station (the end of the line). There's a taxi stand just outside the Amtrak station. Tell the taxi driver you want to go to the Greyhound Station at 1716 E. 7th (just east of Alameda). From either Metro Center or Union Station it should be a very short ride.
Greyhound has nine departures a day for Indio (and Palm Springs, Phoenix, etc.) There is a station in Indio at 45-525 Oasis Street. I have no clue how that relates to the festival, but you should be able to get local transportation from there. The ride from L.A. to Indio is a little over three hours.

I live in LA (near LAX) and grew up in Coachella (my homecoming dance junior year was at the polo grounds where the Coachella festival is held) -- dmb is right about taking the Greyhound from LAX to Indio. Once you're in Indio you're going to have to find a taxi. There is a local busline called the SunBus that runs near the Greyhound depot (line 80) and swings down Monroe near the polo grounds, but it won't take you directly to it.
Indio is a sleepy small town, so don't expect transportation to be quick or easy. I would suggest looking at www.mapquest.com to see maps of the area and also look at the SunBus website (http://www.sunline.org/home/index.asp?page=150) to see the route for yourself.
April is a nice time of year down there--bring sunblock and prepare for it to be a bit windy.

RE:
How to get from LA (Airport) to Indio, California (Coachella Festival)?
I'm goint to Coachella Festival 2007 on April. I'm flying to LA and need a way to get to Coachella valley. What are my options? Don't know the name of the airport I'm landing in, but you can give general options to get from LA to Indio too.
Thanks.

Your BEST option, if available to you, is to fly into Palm Springs (PSP) via Las Vegas or Phoenix, then you are only about 5 or 6 miles from Indio. You can take a cab that short distance. LAX is about 150 miles from Indio and a bus or rental car would be the only economical choices. There is no train service to Indio from Los Angeles.

Rest of the way to where? Direct to the festival? To a hotel nearby? The festival website gives details of the shuttles it runs from surrounding communities to the festival. I'd go that website, it has lots of into. Googling "Palm Springs airport shuttle" tells me that there is airport shuttle service to various hotels and elsewhere in the area. Hotels often have their own airport shuttles too and of course there are taxis. Flying to Palm Springs is probably the cheapest way to get there.
