Dogs need 'special treats' just like people do, so I actually made 'Christmas Cookies' for my dogs:

2 cups cornmeal (the 'less ground' the better)
1/2 cup flour (whole wheat is best)
1 package 'dry' au jus mix (for the 'beefy flavor' and probably way too much salt)
1 large egg
about 1/2 cup 'grease' ... I used 'unsalted butter' but you can use any edible 'grease' ... even oil ... if it has a 'tasty flavor' to the dog.

Mix in a bowl until it turns to a 'only slightly crumbly' mass. Press it out to about 1/3-1/2 inch thick and bake at 350 degrees for about ten minutes. (You want the 'grease' to melt if it's 'solid' so that may take more time if you use 'lard' than if you use 'oil.' Cut into 'bite sized' pieces when it's still 'hot' from the oven, but let it cool totally before you try 'moving' the cookies. Store in a 'refrigerator container' in the refrigerator, because these are NOT 'dry cookies' like you get from the store. And DO NOT give your dog a 'whole meal' of these cookies ... they're simply 'fun treats' and the dog shouldn't have more than four a day (sized for the particular dog).

go to recipezaar.com and type in dog treats.
I see recipes there all the time for dogs.
These recipes are from regular people, so they are tried and true recipes with easy directions and ingredients.
The best part, though, is that many of the recipes have been "reviewed" by readers. You can look for one that has lots of positive reviews. You can also skip the ones that people tried and did not like, for whatever reason.
Your doggy is one lucky California pooch!!
