Here are the list of airports and their code names on various islands:

Honolulu (HNL) Oahu (HNL)
Maui (OGG) Kahului (OGG)
Kauai (LIH) Lihue (LIH)
Kona (KOA) Kapalua (JHM)
Hilo (ITO) Princeville (HPV)
Molokai (MKK) Lanai City (LNY )

There are direct flights from many cities on the US mainland to Honolulu (on Oahu) and from some cities to Maui . From there, if you want to go to the other islands, there are local Hawaiian carriers that you can use.

It would help if you'll disclose your departing city on the mainland and on which Haiwaiian island you plan to stay initially. I can amend my answer after I've seen that information.

Maui would be the best, but I am biased. I have reasons though. Maui has a lower crime rate than Oahu (Honolulu). People still generally watch out for each other. The population is still less than it was when I grew up there. Also, it is still possible to rent a guide who can show you the places that are not on the tourist maps. Haleakala's volcano is a wonder. If your kids like to ride bicycles you can take the bike tour down the road from the volcano. The road is wide and well paved. These bike tours have been going on for years so drivers are used to them, plus you start at dawn and can see paradise as you wind your way down to the sea. You can also rent snorkels, fins, and masks, to avail of some of the best skin-diving in the world. I recommend Kihei for this because there is almost no current there. Aloha and Mahalo

There are direct flights from the mainland (SFO AND LAX) to:

Honolulu (Oahu) HNL
Kahului (Maui) OGG
Kona (Big Island of Hawaii) KOA
Lihue (Kauai) LIH

I believe United and American go to all four. Delta goes to Maui as do a number of charter type airlines like ATA

In addition to the mainland flights there are 4 interisland airlines that also fly to these airports. Hilo (ITO) can be reached only by flying inter-island with most of those flights originating in Honolulu.

If nothing flies directly from your departure point, then fly into Honolulu. If you want to see Oahu, visit there first, then book an inter-island flight to any outer island. There are currently about 4 airlines flying inter-island, so fares are sometimes very competitive. Make reservations on-line early and you might get a really good deal. Most island are about 30-45 minutes airtime from Honolulu--- a short, pleasant flight.
Be sure to get out of the tourist areas (like Waikiki) and see the other parts of the islands. The natural beauty is not only extremely variegated, it is also quite breath-taking.
Aloha!
PS Actually, Hilo now has direct flights from Oakland-- ATA, I thiink. Always changing--- so 'shop' on-line

You can usually fly directlt from the mainland to Honolulu on Oahu, Kona on Hawaii, and Kahului on Maui. If you want to go to one of the smaller airports, you have to go through Honolulu.

Just for clarification, Hilo is a city on the island of Hawaii (Big Island, to locals).
