Geting a cat declawed is a horrible thing to do unless you have and incredibly great reason to do it. Doing this will take away the cats own ability to defend itself. Say the cat was lost out in the wild, the cat would have a better chance of not surviving without its claws then being able to climb trees to hide, and using its claws to scratch and attack enemies. It is much better to let your cats keep their claws. Make usre you clip there claes if your doctor does not. Some cats have their claws grow so long the go into their skin. For your cats safety do NOT get them declawed.

Declawing a cat is never a good thing, especially if they go outside. The claws are thier only defense besides their teeth. If you can hold the cat closely enough, and it allows you to do so, clip the claws with animal nail clippers- not too close to the quick though or this will cause severe bleeding -like if you cut your nails too close to the skin and you bleed- which can cause infection. If you don't feel comfortable enough to do it yourself, most vets will do it for a nominal fee.

NO - NO - NEVER and NO! Only under the most desperate of circumstances should someone EVER de-claw a cat! It's amputation - not claw removal! Their claws are small bone-like structures and to compare it to humans would be like having your finger removed from the nail to the first knucle going backwards from there - you'd have stub fingers!

It's cruel - inhumane - and just wrong! A co-worker tried everything to avoid this and had to resort to this ONLY because the nail caps method did not work after the cat chewed them off all the time and got her paws infected by doing so. She felt like garbage doing it and still does months later and regrets it every single day!

You have to get away from the idea that a vet will rip a cat's claws out. Nowadays they use a laser treatment that is very humane. We have had our cats declawed for years and will continue to do so for any new cats brought into our home.

Some think that there are good reasons to get a cat declawed. I totally DISAGREE. If you think that you have a good reason then don't get a cat.
It is just an excuse for you being lazy or not wanting to deal with it. If you can't accept a pet for the way they are don't get one.
There are humane ways to deal with the issue and if you can't get one of them to work then you are not good with cats and should consider getting a dog instead.
I have NEVER had any major problems with scratching and I have had many cats. But I have time and patience and lots of TLC to give them and that is what makes the difference.

I think it is a bad decision on the owner, too. The cats would have no protection from any other animal if they are declawed. They would be unable to climb a tree in case they are being chased and they would be unable to scare away a predator if they were caught on the ground. Unless the cat were an indoor one, I wouldn't suggest getting the cat declawed. . .and even if the cat was indoor, the chances that would become a more violent and angry cat would be likely. . .

Absolutely horrible and cruel. I know many vets who refuse to use the procedure. I wonder if people that have it done even realize that the tip of the actual toe is removed, not just the claw....ouch. Have a good day.

NO WAY!!!!! Getting a cat declawed is like taking away our fingernails ! Cats have claws for a reason ( like self protection ) and if someone got their cat declawed, they can't reclaw them. Most places tell you not to get your cat declawed, and i don't blame them !! Before I got my cat , they had me sign a paper not to have my cat declawed. If I did not sign that paper , nothing would change my mind not even a million dollars , would make want to get my cat declawed. I don't care if it is an inside cat or not, either way there is no reason to get your cat declawed. You shouldn't even have to think about it !!!!

It is truly horrible, many vets in my city have actually banned the procedure. I suggest people use soft paws instead. (little rubber caps that cover their claws) They actually remove the nail all the way including their first knuckle on each finger. Horrible really.

i agree. it is not hard to keep thier nails trimmed. and it is only like $5 to get it done at the groomer. You can get those little rubber covers for their nails.
Even if a cat is an indoor cat there is still the risk of it getting outside. It will need some sort of defence.
