I had tmj arthroscopy, and I know how you feel. Its terrifying to have surgery, and the best advice I can give you is to do your research on your doctor. I had to travel 3 hours away. My jaw clicked and popped so bad for years that I suffered from migraines. My jaw is better now, the only thing that feels a little weird is my teeth. They are actually aligned now and it takes awhile on getting used to.What surgery are you getting done? (arthroscopy, breaking the jaw..??)

I didn't get my braces on till I was an adult. Orthodontics is much more than cosmetic- it's about making sure that your teeth align properly so your mouth can function as it should, as well as make it easier to clean/floss.
My treatment plan included 2 dental surgeries-1 to expand my palate, and one to reduce the projection of my lower jaw. (Had I seen an orthodontist as a child, i would have avoided the surgery).
I did have the first surgery and it was not bad. To simplify it- they had to break my upper jaw and put in an expander that would be "cranked" for a few weeks till the desired specifications were met. I was a little sick on the stomach from the anesthesia but had no pain from the surgery. And fortunately for me, the first surgery help to create enough space that I did not need the 2ND.
Good Luck!
