As a Salon owner, and stylist for 16 years...

They should give you a fairly specific quote during the consultation, and Not over the phone.

So unless they explain why there may be any kind of increase to you before they start the service
(such as you added something extra to your service after the consultation during the visit)

or,

if something in your hair made it difficult to perform the service and they tell you during the service
(such as: you colored your hair yourself and didn't tell them before a color service)

Then I would tell you if you were quoted a price and it is different when the style is performed, you DO NOT have to pay the difference.

Always ask questions during the consultation, if they rush into the service without you knowing full well what's going to happen and how much it will cost, then it's a classic case of buyer beware.

I hope that helps

Most stylists work on commision and their pricing is based off of length as well as the density, their designer and education level (can cost more for master, artistic, executive designers) how much product was used (such as color, perm solution, etc)! Most prices are listed at a starting at rate! If this is something that concerns you definately bring this up in the consultation before the process has begun!

It depends on the length, thickness, and coarseness of your hair. At least thats how my stylist does it. If you have really thick hair and want it colored it takes more chemicals than that of someone with thin hair. So it is about time and supplies for the price

Because they want you to think it's cheap to attract poor unknowing customers. but once they start on your hair they know that they'll get the money out of you or it's theft of services.they also go by the texture and length

.....and up. everything extra IS extra.
i usually tell people ........."from x amount to y amount". and i won't charge (or do) extra unless asked to do so. then i tell them , "it's z extra dollars" and let the client say yes or no.
