It depends on the dish. For example, if you are cooking soup you can add a potato to soak up the salty flavor. Starch is generally pretty good at balancing out salt.

However, the best thing to do is to simply not add as much salt as the recipe calls for.

I read somewhere that a fix for salty soup is throwing a potato in the pot. The potato will soak up any excess salt.

Raw potatoes are excellent in sucking the salt out of things especially boiled ham dinners. Just place big chunks in your dish and when the dish is done being cooked remove them. Good luck.

What dinner is it? Hard to say if we dont know what your making. A few things i know to do.
Use unsalted butter, unsalted broths and stocks.
If its a soup, put one raw potato in the soup pot for a minute. It will soak up some salt.

well, I'm not cooking much but may be this little thing might help :O) Ham is always very salty. So I boil it for a while, may be 10-15 minutes and it's getting much less salty.

depending on the dish you may be able to add some sugar to it, or tomatoes- sometimes adding some starch such as potatoes will take away some of the saltiness as well.

It depends on the dish, but usually they put Lemon as a neutralizer for the salt but then again, you can't put Lemon all the time in a dish, so what is the dish like?

serve with a starch, like rice, potatoes, bread, or pasta.

or add lemon juice, it will make it more tart than salty. or add pepper and spices, or maybe even garlic to cover up the flavor a bit.

There are many "salt fixes", such as par boiling your ham in 7up or adding a carrot or potatoe to stews and soups, but it would help if you were more spacific as to the dish you are preparing.
