I agree with JACK OF TRADES except that the intake manifold on the particular vehicle you are referring to, is made out of plastic.

The intake manifold is the aluminum casting (oops) plastic molded chamber that is bolted between the cylinder heads (2) and your throttle body fuel injection. This manifold is a sealed housing that carries the fuel / air mixture to the intake valves. Some vehicles have fuel injector nozzles very close to the throttle butterfly valves. There placed directly over the intake ports. These intake castings are aluminum they were used on the (early 32 valve Duratec Ford engines). Car manufactures today make the intake manifolds made of plastic because they're cheaper to make.

do you mean what does it do? it's a major engine component that is in between the outside air and the cylinders. depending on whether you have multiport fuel injection or not it either carries an air/fuel mixture or just plain, filtered air. replacing one is a very involved job. it shouldn't involve actually removing the engine, though. probably the most common problem with them is an air leak caused by either a crack or a bad gasket. hope for the gasket. sometimes they get warped from overheating and this is sometimes repairable by grinding it straight, sometimes not. whatever the problem, though, it's gonna cost at least a few hundred and very likely over $1000 to get it fixed. hope this helps.
I just had to add this: they're making them out of plastic now!?! that sounds like a dumb idea to me. call me old-fashioned but i think all major engine components should be metal. plastic! really!
