My brother in law is thinking about the Navy, he wants to become a MA but someone told him you need to be at a certain rank before he can do that. If so, are there certain jobs that would help him in the meantime until he was able to try to become a MA? Thanks for any info in advance.

Ok so the other answers on here are incorrect. The requirments for becoming a Navy MA, is being able to score the minimum score one the ASVAB for that rating, no criminal background and I mean NO criminal record it will be checked strictly!! He can go into the Navy with a contract signed as a MA. It used to be you had to be an E-5 to be a MA but in 2001 they changed tht regulation to where that anyone can become one including people just joining the Navy. He will go to basic training in Waukegan, ILL, about 30 miles north of Chicago, basically the last city before the Wisconsin border. After that 3 months he will go to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for three months of schooling. Mind you this school teaches Air Force Marine and Navy police officers there, male and female.
That is all I know about it, the recruiter will be able to give you the required scores on the ASVAB and if they dont, LEAVE tht recruiter and talk to another one across town!!

He is now able to enlist with a job guarantee as an MA. It used to be that a person had to be an E-5 to be eligible to cross-rate to MA. This requirement has been relaxed. Now you come in as an MA and go from RTC(boot camp) to MA school either in San Diego, Kings Bay, GA, or Norfolk VA. The only problems may be if he has a criminal record, drug use, or doesn't score high enough on the asvab test. Good luck

you can now get MA in your initial contract without having to crossrate. All other mimnum requirements are the same though.
