They may be a common tattoo design. The good thing is that are many talented artist out there that can draw one up for you that would be completely unique.

They don't all have to look the same. Color and shading can make a world of difference to an otherwise "common" tat design.

The koi is an especially important symbol in Japanese folklore, so it's not at all surprising that it's a common motif in Japanese-style tattoos. It symbolizes courage, strength, perseverance and obtaining lofty goals. In folklore, some koi go on to become dragons, the most esteemed of Asian mythological animals.

I personally don't think koi are any more common for tattoos than eagles, wolves, tigers or any other beautiful, majestic animal. And if the symbolism suits you, then I certainly would not worry that someone else is sporting a koi too.

If Koi have some meaning to you.....maybe if you are of Asian descent (or if you just have hankering for a big ole mess of fried koi...lol) then get a Koi. The point isn't JUST how many other people have them. Do your tatts have meaning to you? Is your tatt just another piece of flash off the wall colored in by a monkey with an ink machine? Or is your tatt a piece of ART?

it all depends on the design and the artwork. i am asian. and i have a tattoo of a koi (my profile picture) i am working on converting it into a full back tattoo and am extremely proud of it. however i have seen some horrible looking koi tattoos. but i have also seen some great ones. so, as always i try to judge the tattoo on it's overall design and the talent of the artist that did it.

Nice looking, but too common. You could do a variation, though. On Miami Ink, a guy got a koi morphing into a dragon and it looked cool and was unique.

I don't like them... I have an unnatural fear of koi, so I'd never get one tattooed on myself.

I like them when they have a unique and colorful twist to them. I see a lot of them and people get them for various reasons, but I still like them when they are different.

Same goes for other cliched tattoos, if they are unique and well done, it doesn't matter.

i do like them and i don't personally know anyone with one.
i think you should get one if you like them regardless if
someone else has it. i love butterflies as does many girls
and i have one on my back. granted i like having something
that no one else has but, what is the likelihood that another
person you know or will come in contact with will have your
tattoo or in the same location or hold the same meaning for.

My brothers got one on his calf. I don't care for the tat, but he does. It's definitely a personal decision.
