It's not a competition! Just buy them something you can afford that they can get some use out of.

Since your stepson and his fiance are getting new appliances in their renovated kitchen, including a new refrigerator/freezer and new stove, I'm sure; give them some food to keep in the freezer and cook on their new stove.
You can order some nice steaks/seafood from places like Omaha Steaks for delivery to their home. There are gift packages of different price range to choose from so I'm sure you'll be able to pick out something just right for your budget.
There are several reasons why I recommend frozen food:
1. Young couples cannot always afford to buy nice steaks and seafood as parts of their normal grocery shopping. They'll be thrilled to received them as gifts , nicely packaged and delivered to their doors.
2. They'll love to have something nice to cook in their newly renovated kitchen. It's a drag to have a beautifully appointed kitchen and only hot dogs to try on the new gadgets.
3. It shows your thoughtfulness. They cannot eat another piece of hardware or another new appliance but they can eat well with your gifts.
4. It's sort of fitting in to the theme of kitchen and cooking, showing that you feel the same as the other parents and yet, you are not competing with them by giving the newlyweds more hardware.
5. Since you're not really competing per se, there'll be no direct comparaisons of your gifts versus theirs. The gifts complement each other, not compete. You can then give them only what you can comfortably afford.
6. They may invite you for dinner!!
Have fun! You sound like a very good parent. God bless you!
By the way, I have no business connections with Omaha Steaks. Just a satisfied customer.

This reminds me of "Father of the Bride." The bride's dad had gotten his daughter a cappuchino machine, while the groom's parents had gotten them a new car. The bride's dad was feeling a little intimidated by the lavishness of the car, and not being able to afford a car, didn't really want to give his daughter the coffee maker. But, she loved it, because she loved making her own coffee and espressos, etc. It's not how much money you spend on a gift, it's how much thought you put into it. If the gift's from your heart, and you've taken the needs and wants of the bride and groom into account, then they will love your gift as much as the new kitchen. Best of luck to you, and congrats!

Give them something that lasts forever that they will always have it will be more special then some kitchen because if they ever move the gift isn't really portable and it isn't a competition they're your kids so they know that whatever you give them is from the heart.
Good Luck
